All of your questions could probably be answered just by reading the existing threads in our Nextel forum. But I'll go ahead and answer you here and hopefully your thread will help others get the answers without having to post a new thread in the future.

First, "locked" means a phone will only work with the provider it is branded for, ie the provider it was originally purchased from. When it is unlocked, it will work with other providers ONLY if the provider uses the same technology that the phone is designed to work with. Nextel and Boost are the only iDEN networks in the USA, and Telus is the only Canadian iDEN. There are a few others worldwide, but I'm sure you want your new phone to speak English.

Now, a Boost SIM will always work in a Nextel phone even if the phone is locked to Nextel, but any other iDEN phone from another country would have to be unlocked for your Boost SIM to work in it (fyi Nextel SIMs will not work in a locked Boost phone). Currently, the only LEGAL way to unlock an iDEN phone in the USA is to pay an Authorized Nextel dealer to do it for you. So, if you don't buy the phone already unlocked, you will have to pay to have it done, and I'm not 100% sure a Nextel dealer will unlock a phone from another country, so call one and ask them if you need to know.

Just to recap, GSM is not compatible, only iDEN is compatible with Boost.

In the future, a few well-chosen keywords can probably answer most questions for you if you use our site's Search feature. Also, because so many people fail to read the Announcements in this forum, do not ever ask us how to unlock your iDEN phone because nobody on this site can legally help you with that. Motorola prohibits tampering with their proprietary technology unless you are an Authorized dealer for a company that sells iDEN services.

I hope this answered all of your questions. I bet you can learn all kinds of neat things you didn't already know if you start reading the Nextel forum's existing threads, and before long you'll be answering questions instead of asking them
