i930 texting problem?

Alright i got my moms old i930 today, and she activated it.(my i880 broke)

When i send a text, it confirms it as sent, but it will never make it to the destination. People send me, and i never get them either. Every once in a while it tells me to turn on the GSM network. I try that, and then theres no service. Theres no bars no matter where I am, and i cant call or anything. whats the deal??
