The Nokia Lumia 1020 has really taken the smart phone world by storm because of its 41 MP camera. But apart from the camera is the smart phone really worth anything? Here I am going to compare with the Sony Xperia Z Ultra which has also managed to turn a lot of eyes with its new age technology. While the Xperia Z Ultra is more of a phablet than a smart phone, I still think it is worth comparing it with one of the best smart phones out there today. Who do you think will come out on top? Read on to find out...

    Size and weight

The Lumia 1020 measures 130.4 x 71.4 x 10.4 mm while the Xperia Z Ultra measures 179.4 x 92.2 x 6.5 mm. Now keep in mind that the Xperia Z Ultra has a much larger display while the Lumia 1020 has to fit in a 41 MP camera. Still, a 6.5 mm thickness on the Xperia Z Ultra is quite amazing. The Lumia 1020 weighs 158 g while the Xperia Z Ultra weighs 212 g. The Xperia Z Ultra is a little heavy, even for a phablet.

This point should be a draw because both smart phones have their own advantages and disadvantages and it wouldn’t be fair to award the point to either.

    Display

This one is a little tricky. While the Lumia 1020 has a much smaller 4.5” display as compared to the 6.4” display of the Xperia Z Ultra, the Lumia 1020 uses better technology (AMOLED) as compared to the Xperia Z Ultra (TFT). But when you compare the pixel density between both these smart phones the Lumia 1020 loses out with its 334 ppi as opposed to the 342 ppi on the Xperia Z Ultra. Again, both smart phones have their own pros and cons.

This point is going to be another draw.

    Memory & Storage

This point is quite close as well. Both smart phones come with 2 GB of RAM. But, while the Lumia 1020 has a maximum clocking speed of 500 MHz, the Xperia Z Ultra has a maximum clocking speed of 800 MHz. When it comes to storage, the Lumia 1020 comes with 32 GB of internal storage and not storage expansion while the Xperia Z Ultra comes with 16 GB of internal storage and storage expansion up to 64 GB.

The Xperia Z Ultra picks up the first point in this comparison because of its faster clock speed and storage expansion capabilities.

    Camera

This point was pretty much decided when I mentioned that the Lumia 1020 has a 41 MP camera. That’s right, and it also has a Xenon flash to accompany the regular LED flash. As far as the Xperia Z Ultra is concerned, it comes with an 8 MP camera that looks meager in front of the Lumia 1020. Both smart phones have a wide range of features and support video recording at 1080p HD. As far as the front camera is concerned, the Lumia 1020 has a 1.2 MP shooter while the Xperia Z Ultra has a 2 MP camera.

But, the point can’t go to any other smart phone except the Lumia 1020. No matter what anyone says, the Lumia 1020 is the best camera smart phone in the market today and that’s why it picks up this point.

    OS & Performance

The Xperia Z Ultra runs on Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean) while the Lumia 1020 runs on Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows Phone 8. While I can go on and on about the various advantages and disadvantages of both operating systems, let’s just say both of them have their loyalists. But when we compare technology between both these smart phones, the Xperia Z Ultra is way ahead. It comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 system chip and Quad core, 2200 MHz, Krait 400 processor. On the other hand, the Lumia 1020 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 system chip and a Dual core, 1500 MHz, Krait processor. As far as the graphics processor is concerned, the Lumia 1020 has an Adreno 225 processor while the Xperia Z Ultra has an Adreno 330 processor.

While, I can’t separate both operating systems, as far as technology is concerned, the Xperia Z Ultra clearly picks up this point.

    Battery

The Xperia Z Ultra comes with a huge 3,000 mAh battery while the Lumia 1020 comes with a reasonable 2,000 mAh battery. Unfortunately though, when you compare the battery life between both these smart phones, the Lumia 1020 gets left behind. It offers a standby time of 16 days which is pretty reasonable in today’s world, but the Xperia Z Ultra offers a standby time of a whopping 36 days. Now that is amazing.

Another point for the Xperia Z Ultra.

    (Nokia Lumia 1020 - One / Sony Xperia Z Ultra - Three)

    Price

There isn’t any definite news regarding the pricing of either of these smart phones and we can only compare based on rumors. The latest rumors say that the Lumia 1020 will cost around $ 700 while the Xperia Z Ultra will also cost between $ 650 and $ 700. Still, these are only rumors and it wouldn’t be fair to comment on either smart phone till their price is actually released.

This one will be a draw for now.

    (Nokia Lumia 1020 - One / Sony Xperia Z Ultra - Three)

    Conclusion

So, while the final score reads 3 points to 1 in favor of the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, the 1 point which the Nokia Lumia 1020 is its camera. If it was up to me, I would choose the Nokia Lumia 1020 over the Sony Xperia Z Ultra any day, but that is mainly because I love the Windows Phone 8 operating system and would love to have a 41 MP camera on my smart phone. But, if that isn’t a priority for you and you are looking for the better overall smart phone, you should go with the Sony Xperia Z Ultra although photography will suffer since it doesn't have any sort of flash.

I had both phones and would go with the Ultra. Mostly because of the perfect graphics, weight and software.
