Send Text msg to e-mail address on Nokia Lumia 520

I just switched my service to AT&T, in part because they told me, twice, that I could send a text msg directly to an e-mail address without using an e-mail service on the phone. Now I have a Lumia 520 in hand and I cannot get it to work.
Can anyone tell me how to use the text feature to send a msg directly to an e-mail address?

Instead of putting a number in the 'To:' field, try the email address.

By the way, does a WiFi or data connection have to be active in order for this to work?

You shouldn't need either, no. A data connection would only be needed if you send a picture. Then it would be mms.

AT&T is telling me that I have to have data turned on in order to send a text to e-mail.

Unless I'm missing something, they're wrong. You need data to send email, but you don't need data to send sms to an email address.

To test I just turned off data on my phone and sent a message to my email via SMS, it worked.
