Imagine ur cell battery is very low, u r expecting an important call
and and u don't have a charger". Nokia instrument comes with a reserve battery. To activate, key is "*3370#" your cell will restart with this reserve and your instrument will show a 50% incerase in battery. This reserve will get charged when u charge ur cell next time. Try it

that just activates ehanced full rate speech codec, which actually decreases your batterylife by 5%. If you use "*4720#" it will activate the half rate speech codec which will increase your battery life by 30%. I forgot where i learned this... and I'm not sure if i'm 100% right so anyone please correct me!

you're right about that... it just changes the codec to efr which drains your battery 5% faster. going half rate increases your battery life by 30%. your phone had a reboot that's why it seemed that your battery increased. try receiving a call and your battery indicator would return to the same status. if it works for you though then good for you.
