    Hi, An annoying problem this.

Two weeks ago I bought a Nokia 5146 from a car-boot sale, complete with
Orange PAYT SIM. The phone seems to be working ok, as I can dial Orange
Customer Service from it and chat without a problem. Great so-far.

I do not know the telephone number of the phone. The phone has no credit on
it, so I am unable to make a call to my landline, to do 1471.

I have spoken with Orange, and they will not tell me the number of the phone
unless I can give the the secutity details that the original owner gave when
they first registred it, and I think that is fair enough. I have no way of
    contacting the original owner now.

I am reluctant to attempt putting credit on this phone until I know the
number, and also would rather not buy another SIM when I know this one is
    live.

Is there any way I can get the network to tell me the number. I have a
Vodafone too, and with that I can do *#100# Sadly Orange does not accept
    that code.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Jim

Try calling '450' from the phone. If im right, this is the orange topup
line, and - if its like O2, it should recite the number back to you and ask
you if you want to top it up, and theres yer number!
Let us know if it doesnt work

What phone are you using it in as some phones have the facility to
    view your own number.

If I was you I would first get the imei number (dial *#06#), then phone CS
and find out if has been stolen telling them were you got it from, then if
everything is ok bite the bullet and get yourself a new sim card that will
give you a new number of your own. Stops any of the previous owners contacts
    phoning you.

I took Dablyz' advice, and it worked a treat.

The funny thing is, I've had the phone two weeks now. It has been on 24/7 &
it has not rung once. I was hoping someone would ring it, that way I might
have been able to ask the caller what number they had dialled. If it
carries on like this it will be no nuisance at all. Now I have the number I
have phoned it, and all seems to be well & working fine.

    Cheers Dave

Sadly the Nokia 5146 does not have this facility. I trued the SIM in my
3210 to see if that would reveal thenumber but it was pretty well the same
    options as the 5146.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Hmm, it seems odd to me that you can call OCS on it with no credit, as
this is a chargeable call on PAYG, only contract phones can call OCS free.

It also seems somewhat odd that the seller didn't tell you the number when
you bought it..? I doubt it has been reported stolen though as if it were
and had been blacklisted you wouldn't be able to make any calls at all,
    you wouldn't get a signal.

My mistake Ivor, I meant to say that I could call the Operator on 100 and
    chat fine.

The seller did give me the number but I lost it before I got home. I have
now stored the number in the phonebook. That should be a great
    help.......until I accidentally lock the phone ;-)

    Cheers Ivor
