Right, it's highly unlikely a GSM phone could be modified to work on a CDMA network. What it boils down to is that there are different methods for transmitting cell phone calls and data. GSM uses TDMA while Verizon uses CDMA, there's also Sprint PCS, another completely different system, and TDMA, which is another system (GSM uses TDMA as it's underlying technology, but TDMA is also another system used in the US) and these systems are completely incompatible with each other.

On the other hand, with AT&T's exclusive contract with Apple winding down, it's likely that a CDMA version of the iPhone DOES exist, and probably always has, but you'll be hard pressed to find them anywhere other than in the hands of the Apple techs who developed them. It's a virtual certainty that CDMA iPhones and ones that use Sprint PCS exist, but probably exist in low numbers, and are NOT available to the general public in any way. Until Apple starts to ink deals with other carriers who use different systems, they'll not be manufactured in larger numbers, and you'll not see these phones anywhere.

Cloning an ESN number hasn't been possible in almost 10 years...besides, it was never actually possible to clone an ESN number.

It was possible to clone a cell phone number, but that's been resolved.

I hear that apple might be looking into switching to verizon when the att contract expires, any truth to this or is it just a rumor?

"Switching to" is not correct, if anything, they'll be selling a CDMA version of the iPhone through Verizon. They'll most certainly continue to sell a GSM version as well.

I'm wondering if the iPhone will be one of the first phones to use LTE on the Verizon.Alltel network.

It's pretty much a moot point "verizon or alltel", since Verizon bought Alltel.

If you want to use an iPhone on Verizon, it may be possible within a year or two as Verizon is currently testing our the GSM 4G technology called LTE which stands for Long Term Evolution. This one standard will be adopted by all current GSM providers in North America (AT&T, T-mobile, Rogers (Canada), Fido(Canada)) and all major CDMA providers (Verizon, Bell (Canada), Telus (Canada) with the remaining holdouts being Sprint in the US and a few other smaller providers in the US and Canada.

From what I understand, providers that will offer LTE will also roll out 3G GSM service to profit from roaming customers visiting from other countries and to gain access to phones like the iPhone earlier.

Re: iphone with verizon or alltel?

LTE is actually being considered a "neutral" technology since it is so versatile. It WILL NOT be considered a "GSM" technology in the United States. My offices here are calling it technology letter N (TLN).

It is expected that Verizon Wireless will begin to use this technology which WILL use SIM Cards...however, it is just like iDEN having SIM Cards...that doesn't mean iDEN is GSM (it isn't)...therefore LTE is being considered its own technology separate of that of GSM.

It has been known to be easier to convert GSM networks to LTE...but CDMA is a but harder. Verizon has a good handle on it since they expect it to be in half the country AT LEAST by 2011.

The first LTE devices released on Verizon's network will be compatible for use on the LTE and CDMA networks...which is great considering if AT&T goes with LTE also as well as Verizon having a strong CDMA network. It isn't certain whether Verizon will always get their LTE devices CDMA compatible, but the Verizon CDMA network isn't going anywhere...for quite some time.

I'm not here to argue with anyone. But unless if you work for Verizon and because of that have inside knowledge that people like me do not, these wikipedia entries would contradict what you just said.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Term_Evolution
LTE (Long Term Evolution) is a set of enhancements to the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) which will be introduced in 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 8.
Up here in Canada, we have two GSM providers which offer GSM (Edge/GPRS) and 3G HSDPA. In Japan and Europe, some countries use UMTS for their 3G GSM services.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3GPP_Long_Term_Evolution#Carrier_adoption
Despite initial development of the rival UMB standard, which was designed as an upgrade path for CDMA networks, most operators of networks based upon the latter system have also announced their intent to migrate to LTE, resulting in discontinuation of UMB development.

Verizon Wireless is presently testing its LTE network[24] and selects Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent as Primary Network Vendors for LTE Network.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_Mobility#Network_Upgrade
In October 2008 Telus Mobility and Bell announced plans to deploy HSPA technology by 2010 as part of an effort to eventually upgrade to LTE technology.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telus_Mobility#Wireless_HSPA_Upgrade
Telus has signed an agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks to create an overlay HSPA network that will run along side their existing CDMA network. The new network should be complete by the beginning of 2010.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verizon_Wireless#LTE_and_Verizon_Wireless

You are correct that Verizon has officially tried to down play the connection to GSM/HSDPA/UMTS technology, it is obviously an extension of that technology rather than CDMA not just because it uses SIM cards but because of the underlying architecture. It is supposed to be backwards compatible with 3G GSM and most of the other CDMA carriers transitioning in North America will implement 3G or 3G+ (7.2Mbps) as an interim step to gain roaming customers.

I do mobile development on the iPhone and I think I can help. Ok
    1) you can switch the to CDMA hardware from GSM but you with have to change the total iPhone OS on how the phone communicates then you need to add a ESN slot and all that.
    2) to activate a CDMA type phone you MUST activate in stores it's not like the SIM Cards where you pop in a SIM and go. If you did get everything right and changed correctly your service provider probably wouldn't let you activate it.

Must I also remind you tampering with the iPhone OS is not recommended so be careful with that. I have a iPhone 3G with T-Mobile and I run iPhone OS 3.0 email me for SIM unlock info or Twitter me
    Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16
