I'm heard good things about some of the Toshibas in that price range... stay away from the lower few models though. I would avoid HP prasarios like the plague (my gf had one... thing overheats and turns off constantly unless she runs the tragus 2-fan system externally). I've also ehard that the dells are pretty reliable, although they tend to get pretty warm and bulky as well.
I've also had really good luck with the Compaq Business line (through school). I've had the EVO N800W and now the HP-Compaq NW8240. Both have been pretty reliable for how much I abuse them (between classes, wisconsin winters, in and out of backpacks, high heat from benchmarking, etc). They're probably out of the price range though (about $2000-$2500).
Let us know what you decide

I'm on my second hp now... the first needed to be replaced after the "dog" (read "husband") knocked it off of the table where it landed on the inserted PCMCIA card killing the slot...
I have the dv1000 now (about 1k depending on the specs you choose)... I've never had an overheating problem and enjoy it - ALTHOUGH - I bought it as a toy for net, video editing, and light use - I have a desktop for anything heavy dutyLast edited by jeaniesing; 10-24-2005 at 04:51 PM.

Don't forget to consider the screen in your specs as well. There is a wide variety of size/resolution available, and if you are carrying that laptop around with you presumably you will spend most of your time looking at the screen that comes with it. ie. not plugging into an external monitor.
