i am almost halfway through a 2 year contract with US cellular and my phone got rained on and rather than pay to get it fixed, i've been looking at phones on ebay. but not all of them say which service providers they work for. does any phone with CDMA work for US Cellular? do i need an unlocked phone?

Yes unlocked, cdma depends on area with USCellular. Not all areas are CDMA and yes it will matter.

Buy insurance than say it got stolen, only $4 per month with USCellular.
