Hello,
I know this is going to sound stupid, but where does Android install it's apps? In the ROM? or can you install them onto the SD card or other available memory?
I am interested in the Sholes and it only has 512 ROM and I am a HUGE app user on my BlackBerry (I have run out of room and don't want to again).
Thanks in advance guys,
Chris
I found a link here: Motorola Droid / Tao A855 (Motorola Sholes) Specs | Technical Specifications | PDAdb.net - Comprehensive Database of PDA, PDA Phone, Smartphone, PNA & Mobile Device Specifications
that states "secondary ROM" so will that be available for app installation as well? (did some more searching and found that Android only installs apps in ROM".
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Where does Android install apps?
If you update to a Cyan rom and many others, they can automatically put apps on your sd card. There are scripts to automatically format cards so that there is an ext2/3/4 and a swap partition, too. I have a 4 gig card, with 3 gigs formatted to fat32 - still have a gig left but am going to get a bigger card soon.
I think there is an actual apps2sd program in the Market for 1.5 and above versions of Android but the roms I use do it for me.
One thing to note is that class 6 micro sd cards work the best.

A quick addition to my previous post - my G1 has much, much less ram in the ROM, so as long as there is an sd slot, you'll be fine. I have almost 150 apps on my phone with 64 megs of available RAM in the phone itself.
Stock Android isn't good for power users but if you head over to xda-dev, you'll see what can be done when a bunch of creative phone geeks do their thing.

Re: Where does Android install apps?
I've only ever used a Blackberry or Treo for work and never owned a smartphone personally until probably later this month....how big are these apps?
I know the Droid has something like 256MB dedicated for apps, so how much on average in size are they? About how many could you relatively fit on one device?
From what I've read/heard the later HTC and Droid models will allow for app installs to microSD cards due to the increased processors being able to handle the extra memory needed to read from multiple devices.
