Using HTC Backup, you can easily create daily backups in the cloud. As such, once you factory reset your smartphone, you can restore your data with ease. Backing up data in the cloud can also be useful when switching to a new smartphone, as the data can be restored on the new device.

NOTE: HTC Backup uses Google Drive for storing data in the cloud.

Backing Up the HTC Desire 516 to Google Drive:

  1. While viewing the home screen, swipe the "Status" bar down with two fingers
  2. Tap "Settings" > "Backup & reset"
  3. Go to "Backup account" and tap "HTC Account"
  4. Sign in with your HTC Account. NOTE: you can also use a Facebook or Google account
  5. While on the "Cloud storage" screen, tap "Google Drive" > "OK"
  6. Sign in with your Google account to access Google Drive
  7. When / if prompted, allow HTC Backup to access Drive by tapping "OK"
  8. To back up data automatically, set the "Automatic backup" switch to "ON"
  9. To back up data manually, tap "Back up now"

NOTE: you can perform daily backups of your handset via Wi-Fi automatically. To do so, simply go to "Settings" > "Back up phone daily over Wi-Fi"

Restoring Data from Google Drive:

  1. After you have factory reset your HTC Desire 516, reboot it for the first time and tap "Restore from HTC backup"
  2. Sign in with the account you've used for the backup file
  3. Choose the backup file from the history menu, and tap "Next"
  4. Sign in with your Google account if necessary, and allow HTC Backup to connect to Drive
  5. Once the files have been restored, tap "Next"

Creating Local Backups and Restoring Data

Backing Up Contacts:

  1. While on the home screen, tap "Phone"
  2. Go to the "People" tab and press "Menu"
  3. Tap "Manage contacts" > "Import / Export contacts"
  4. Tap "Export to SD card" > "Export to phone storage"
  5. Choose an account type and tap "Yes" at the next step, assuming that you wish to set a password
  6. Tap "OK" to create the backup file

Restoring Contacts:

  1. From the "People" app, go to the "People" tab
  2. Tap "Menu" > "Manage contacts"
  3. Select to "Import / Export contacts"
  4. Tap "Import from phone storage" or "Import from SD card". Select the option corresponding with the backup file's location
  5. If you have more than one account, choose an account
  6. Select the desired backup file if necessary, and tap "OK"
  7. IF the file is password protected, type in the password and tap "OK"

Backing Up Text Messages:

  1. Launch the "Messages" application
  2. Press "Menu" and tap "Backup / Restore SMS"
  3. Tap "Back up" > "Back up SMS"
  4. Set a password for the file if you so desire
  5. Type in the file's name and press "OK"

Backing UP Text Messages via Email:

  1. Open the "Messages" application
  2. Tap "Menu" and select "Back up / Restore SMS"
  3. Tap "Back up" and choose to "Back up SMS via email"
  4. Enter a password, or otherwise tap "Do not password protect this backup"
  5. In the "To" field, enter your own email address and send the email

NOTE: you can restore the contacts by opening the email, downloading the file and importing its contents via the "Messages" application

Restoring Text Messages:

  1. Launch the "Messages" application
  2. Press "Menu" and tap "Back up / Restore SMS"
  3. Tap "Restore" and choose a method for restoring the data
  4. Tap "next" and select the backup file
  5. Enter the password if the file is protected, or tap "This backup file is not password protected"
  6. Press "OK" to confirm

Backing Up and Restoring Tasks:

  1. First, open the "Tasks" app
  2. Go to the list of tasks, and tap "Menu"
  3. Select "Import / Export" and tap "Export to SD card"
  4. In order to restore your tasks, follow the steps above and tap "Import from SD card" instead

Backing Up Your Dictionary:

  1. From the home screen, drag the "Notification" bar down using two fingers
  2. Tap "Settings" and go to "Language & keyboard"
  3. Tap "HTC Sense Input"
  4. Tap "Personal dictionary"
  5. Press "Menu" and tap "Back up to storage"
  6. Tap "Back up to email" and then touch "OK"

To restore the dictionary:

  1. Access the phone's "Settings" menu and tap "Language & Keyboard"
  2. Tap "HTC Sense Input" and select "Personal Dictionary"
  3. Tap "Menu" > "Restore from storage"
  4. Touch "OK" to confirm
