With the below you will be able to export your contacts from your Palm phone and into your new Droid...

    Step 1
    • Open Palm Desktop
    • Go to File > Export to vCard
    • Save the file in a known location (like your desktop)

    Step 2
    • Log Into your Gmail account
    • Click Contacts in the left menu
    • Click Import in the top right
    • Choose file and select the vCard file you just saved (add them to a group if you want)
    • Click Import
    • Your contacts will be imported into your Gmail account

    Step 3
    • On your Droid make sure you have connected your Gmail account
    • Go to contacts > Menu > Accounts
    • Select your Gmail account > Menu > Sync Now
    • Your new contacts will be imported - Any duplicates should be merged.

Re: Transfer contacts from your Palm to Droid

Help! When I try this I get the following error in Step 1:

    An invalid argument was encountered.

Don't know what argument it is however.

no, when you select multiple records to export to vCard, you get the error "An invalid argument was encountered". I get it too, and have a ton of contacts I'm trying to get off my Palm Desktop to my EVO 4G.

I also tried to export them to .csv, which worked fine, but then Google errors on the csv file as "unrecognized format".... possibly because there's no header record.

I may end up hand entering all these contact, which will be a major pain.. I have notes, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

I encountered the same problem. Upon further troubleshooting, I discovered about 4 "corrupt" contacts in my list of 200+ that would give me the error you two mentioned. In most cases, they were close friends and family that I call more often and had assigned special ring tones to (but not all). I identified and simply deleted the offending contacts (inputting them manually later). Once I had weeded out all the bad contacts, I was able to follow the instructions without a hitch.

-Find them by grabbing and trying to export a section at a time such as letters a through f.
-When you get a bad batch, simply open each contact by double-clicking on it in the Palm desktop.
-The bad ones won't open, but give the error instead.

I share your frustration with finding a decent syncing system. I was a long-time (since 1994) Palm user and couldn't face making the switch to a smartphone. I researched like crazy until I found this app called B-Folders. I was able to just *import* all of my Contacts (it even put stuff into the right fields!) and my Memos (over 1,200) from Palm desktop (no re-keying).

Their nested folder system works just like Palm's categories (only you can have an unlimited number of them and can combine Contacts, Memos, and Passwords all the in the same folder if you want). It's more versatile than Palm (it has this feature of "customizable cards" to keep all sorts of stuff).

I had been using an encrypted password program in addition to Palm before - now it's all in this B-Folders program which even auto-fills your passwords into the login pages you've stored.

Can you tell I really like it? And it's all "off the cloud" secure, just like Palm. And easy backups provide a great sense of security - especially when I’ve never had to use them!

Re: Transfer contacts from your Palm to Droid

    Hey John,

I've been dependent on my Palm Address contacts for so many years, when Android phones came out, I had to keep using two devices (Tungsten + smartphone) in order to not lose all my contacts and phone numbers. (Google kept my email addresses, but not phone numbers. Two databases that wouldn't talk to one another.) I've been in search for a way to migrate my Palm files into my Google and smartphone data. Your instructions worked like a charm! First time, too!

Thank goodness, because my Palm hadn't been working with the synch feature since I upgraded my OS to Win 7. I was using just the Desktop Palm software, and manually entering data and saving it. No more Tungsten, but I was still dependent on my PC to access the Palm Address Book. TODAY I finally sprung myself free, and I feel wonderful!!! Thank you SO much.

BTW: . . . Something funky happened just prior to searching for a way to move my Palm contacts. Whenever I access my Palm Desktop software, I get an error message I'd not seen in all the years I've been using it. Anything I try to do results in this error message: "An invalid argument was encountered." In fact, when I opened the desktop software this week, the data was totalling missing from my Address module. Zip. Nada. I tried to import a recently saved Address database, but it wouldn't take it. I wound up having to import an Address Archive, which is a slightly different animal. It doesn't work exactly like the real database, and I can't close it or enter new addresses or names. The error message keeps appearing, regardless of what I do. (When following your directions above, I had to export the Address Archive vs the real data file. How releaved I was that this worked, as the Palm Desktop software has gotten messed up, and it takes me a while to even get it open and populated each time I need to access it now. I'm using Palm Desktop by ACCESS, version 6.2.2 on Win 7, 64bit.

Any suggestions to fix my corrupt Palm desktop software? (I reinstalled it already, was glad it didn't fail the install, but upon launching it, the software remains without any data, and keeps giving me the same error message. I hope you might be able to help me, as there don't seem to be that many folks out there who are still dependent on their Palm OS data for their address book and calendar. (I always hated Outlook, and never used it.)

Thanks so much John. I hope you're still around since you posted that entry.

    Ciao for now. ~ Mambo

No problem! I'm glad you found this useful. Of course I'm around

I recommend you start a new thread asking about the corrupt desktop. I haven't had a palm phone in my hands in a while.

    Hey John,

Thanks for the suggestion about starting a new thread. As a total newbie to this site, can you direct me as to where (on this rich forum resource) I'd go to enter the new post in the correct category? A URL would be great. (Lastly, while I've got your attention, earlier today I attempted to delete an entry I replied to, but mistakenly replied to the incorrect party. I was able to get into "edit" mode, but there wasn't any option to delete. How about it? Can you tell me, or is this feature restricted in some way?)

    Thanks my friend.
    Best regards,
    Mambo
