Can anyone out there tell me if a Razr with Cingular service can be used as a modem connected to a laptop running Windows XP via a USB cable access the Internet via a Bellsouth account? If so how would you do it? What settings would you have to change and what would they be?

Re: razr as modem to connect laptop to internet
yep you can. Although the fastest speed is gprs 32 - 48 kbps (not much faster than dailup).
follow the link for the software you need.
I connected a v220 and my razr using this software. Its slow and can be expensive if you dont have a data plan. For others that have a different carrier just change the wap settings to your carrier.

Re: razr as modem to connect laptop to internet
Can you connect to the internet without a data plan with your carrier.
If the phone is a modem, I should be able to dial any number just like I do using a regular modem in my PC. So I could use free internet software like net zero and connect to the internet. Right? What am I missing? I am not trying to connect to cingular or tmobile at all. Will it work, I tried it once but could not get it to work. Any advice? I have Razr V3.

Re: razr as modem to connect laptop to internet
I do have a data plan with Cingular and I know how to set it up. But like you said I dont want to connect to Cingular or Tmobile or any other cell phone service provider to access the Internet. I want to use my phone strictly as a modem to connect my computer to the Internet via an Internet service provider (BellSouth). Surely if I can use my phone as a modem to connect to the Internet via my cell phone service provider their has to be a way to connect to the Internet via a Internet service provider. It is just data transmission over a phone connection isnt it? What difference would it make if it were a cellular connection as apposed to a landline connection?

My only concern is the service like bell south or net zero may not support WAP. Is there a way to get around that?

Re: razr as modem to connect laptop to internet
yes moto fan you can connect without a data plan. My provider charges 1 cent per kilobite of data transfered.
I dont think you can dial a non cell carrier internet provider. I tried it with my v220 and my razr. It just dials tries to connect and then hangs up and says connot establish a connection.
Unless there is a special setup that Im unaware of I think your stuck.Last edited by woodyga; 08-15-2006 at 07:02 PM.
