Smartphones are great, but seriously, what is so wrong with having a retractable antenna like the almighty V710/E815 used to have? Or at the very least, something like what the old 700 Treo nub antenna, circa 2007.

All this attention to "antennagate" and death grips and attention to form over function is really quite annoying for those of us who would prefer a phone 1st, and a pocket computer 2nd.

Am I really in the minority to think that having a visible antenna somehow makes your device look less sophisticated, and actually value REAL quality signal reception?

I really dont understand the design philosophy of mobile phone manufacturers today.

I just bought a Droid 2 this week, and while the phone itself looks sharp and does just about everything I could ask for, it will never come close to the reception strength of my old trusty E815. Why cant manufacturers come up with some kind of dual antenna, with a retractable type or something for those questionable spots we all go to with our phones, whether its up in a high rise, or down in a basement, etc, etc.

Design matters more than an antenna. Apple designed a phone where the outer rim of the phone was the antenna which sound so awesome until launch day when people keep losing connection. Every phone has to look sleek and sexy to attract people and manufactures will sacrifice performance to invoke impulse purchasing of aesthetically appealing products.

Stub/retractable antennas are the fugliest things on this earth! It makes the phone look like an old tradesmans phone who hasn't updated since 1993 and doesn't really care what they look like talking to a brick. The designs of phones now don't have enough room to incorporate a huge antenna, they barely even have enough room to fit a screen. Not to mention that it makes it that much more uncomfortable to have a phone in your pocket with an external antenna poking your bits all the time!
