Some eight months after Nokia (or should I say Microsoft now?) released the Nokia Lumia 920 they came out with the Nokia Lumia 925. But what did they change in the smart phone? Surely there must have been some upgrades with this next smart phone. Well, it didn’t get any time in the lime light since the Nokia Lumia 928 was already out and the Nokia Lumia 1020 was just around the corner. So, was this smart phone really necessary and what does it bring to the table? Did Nokia really need to release this smart phone? Read on to find out...

Size and weight

This is probably the only point in which the Lumia 925 shows any improvement from the Lumia 920. It measures 129 x 70.6 x 8.5 mm while the Lumia 920 measures 130.3 x 70.8 x 10.7 mm. A reduction in length, width and thickness. That’s a good start. Even when it comes to weight, the Lumia 925 is much lighter at 139 g to the 185 g of the Lumia 920. So, Nokia have managed to make the Lumia 920 smaller and lighter without reducing the display size. But did it really warrant a new smart phone? Maybe they should have worked a little harder on the Lumia 920, pushed the release back by a few weeks and released a lighter and more compact version.

Anyway, the fact is that the Lumia 925 is the better smart phone as far as size and weight is concerned and easily wins this point.

Display

Nokia have made some minor changes to the display of the Lumia 925. But do these changes have an effect on the display of the smart phone? Both smart phones come with a 4.5” touch screen but while the Lumia 920 has an IPS LCD screen the Lumia 925 has an AMOLED screen. The Lumia 925 has a pixel density of 334 ppi whereas the Lumia 920 has a pixel density of 332 ppi. A measly 2 ppi increase, that is minor. Everything else in both these smart phones is exactly the same.

There definitely isn’t any reason why the Lumia 925 should get this point and therefore it’s a draw.

Memory & Storage

As far as memory and storage is concerned, the Lumia 920 and Lumia 925 don’t have too much of a difference between them. Both smart phones comes with 1 GB of RAM and I am willing to bet my life there isn’t any difference in the operating speed of both smart phones. As far as storage is concerned, both smart phones lack expandable storage which means you have to be happy with what you get. And you don’t get too much with the Lumia 925 that has only 16 GB of internal storage as compared to the Lumia 920 that has 32 GB. A downgrade Nokia, seriously?

I can’t believe this point goes to the Lumia 920.

Camera

If you were to click a photo with the camera on both of these smart phones, you would definitely not be able to tell which picture came from which phone. That’s how similar they are. They both come with an 8.7 MP camera on the back and a Dual LED flash that lets you take some pictures in some pretty dark spaces. Both smart phones support full HD recording at 1080p and come. But, the Lumia 920 has a 1.3 MP front facing camera while the Lumia 925 has a 1.2 MP camera on the front. Both smart phones even support 720p HD recording through the front facing camera.

Even though face detection and panorama have been added to the list of features on the Lumia 925, I don’t see any reason why it deserves this point.

OS & Performance

Both smart phones run on Microsoft’s latest operating system Windows Phone 8. And I’m pretty sure any future updates (like the Lumia Amber update) will be made available for both smart phones. In terms of hardware, I have never seen two smart phones which are so similar on the inside, it’s like they are the same smart phone (which pretty much is the case here as well). Both smart phones have a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 chip and dual core, 1500 MHz, Krait processor. Both smart phones even run on an Adreno 225 graphics processor.

How can you choose a winner between two smart phones that essentially are the same on the inside? You can’t. It’s a draw.

Battery

As far as the battery is concerned, both these smart phones have a 2,000 mAh battery. But, since the Lumia 925 has an AMOLED touch screen, it offers a little longer standby time at 18 days to the 16.7 days of the Lumia 920. An extra day is barely enough to award this point to the Lumia 925.

This point is going to be a draw as well.

Price

This point pretty much explains the whole reason why Nokia released the Lumia 925. It might be a higher model than the Lumia 920, but it doesn’t cost more. It costs $ 470 as compared to the Lumia 920 which costs $ 530. I guess being $ 60 cheaper definitely is a major improvement for any smart phone. But, the Lumia 920 does have an extra 16 GB of storage space. Still, that isn’t enough to warrant an extra $ 60.

This point goes to the Lumia 925.

Conclusion

There you have it folks. Nokia released the Nokia Lumia 920 in September 2012 and in less than a year released the Nokia Lumia 925 which was cheaper, thinner and lighter. If you want my advice here, both these smart phones are quite similar and very different at the same time. I mean, the Nokia Lumia 925 looks like a totally different smart phone and not like the other smart phones in the Lumia series. If you want something different, go for the Nokia Lumia 925. But, if you want a smart phone for rough use, you should go with the Nokia Lumia 920.
