Info: The Samsung Galaxy Grand vs the Nokia Lumia 925

Samsung had released the Samsung Galaxy Grand in December 2012 as a cheaper option for people that can’t afford the Samsung Galaxy S4. As far as the Nokia Lumia 925 is concerned, it really didn’t get any time in the limelight since the Nokia Lumia 928 was announced 4 days before it. In this comparison, I am going to focus on both these forgotten smart phones. Will Samsung prevail or can Nokia prove its worth? Read on to find out...

Size and weight

In terms of size and weight, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but the Lumia 925 is the more compact smart phone. The Lumia 925 measures 129 x 70.6 x 8.5 mm while the Galaxy Grand measures 143.5 x 76.9 x 9.6 mm. I understand that the Galaxy Grand has a larger display, but the difference in size is still too high and the Lumia 925 is 1 mm thinner as well. The Lumia 925 is lighter as well at 139 g to the 162 g of the Galaxy Grand.

This is something that rarely occurs; this point is picked up by the Nokia Lumia 925.

Display

You might think that this point can go either way. But that isn’t true. While the Galaxy Grand has a larger display, that is pretty much all it has going for it. The Galaxy Grand has a 5.0” TFT touch screen while the Lumia 925 has a 4.5” AMOLED touch screen. And as far as pixel density is concerned, the Lumia 925 has a pixel density of 334 ppi as opposed to the 187 ppi of the Galaxy Grand. The Lumia 925 also comes with scratch resistant glass (corning gorilla glass) and is the better display overall.

The Lumia 925 picks up the second point as well.

Memory & Storage

This is a point where Samsung fights back. The Galaxy Grand comes with 8 GB of internal memory but also supports storage expansion up to 64 GB. On the other hand, the Lumia 925 has 16 GB of internal memory but lacks external storage of any sort. As far as RAM is concerned, both smart phones comes with 1 GB You can’t notice any difference as far as operating speed of both these smart phones is concerned.

I really want to call this one a draw, but the Galaxy Grand will get the point just because it provides expandable storage.

Camera

While the Galaxy Grand has an 8 MP camera on the back the Lumia 925 has an 8.7 MP camera. But this isn’t too close a competition. The Galaxy Grand has an LED flash and supports video recording at 1080p. The Lumia 925 has a Dual LED flash and has optical image stabilization, panorama, face detection as well a whole other range of features and it also supports video recording at 1080p. The Galaxy Grand has a 2 MP front facing camera while the Lumia 925 has a 1.2 MP front camera. But, the Lumia 925 supports video recording at 720p through its front camera as well which is really quite cool.

So you see, the Lumia 925 is clearly the better smart phone as far as this point is concerned.

OS & Performance

The Galaxy Grand runs on Android 4.1.2 (JellyBean) while the Lumia 925 runs on the latest Microsoft operating system Windows Phone 8. I wouldn’t want to award this point to the Lumia 925 just because of this. As far as performance is concerned, the Galaxy Grand has a Broadcom VideoCore IV chip and runs on a Dual Core, 1200 MHz, Cortex-A9 processor while the Lumia 925 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 chip and runs on a Dual core, 1500 MHz, Krait processor.

I think that should be enough to explain why this point is being awarded to the Lumia 925 as well.

Battery

There isn’t much to differentiate between both these smart phones as far as the battery is concerned. While the Galaxy Grand has a 2,100 mAh battery, the Lumia 925 has a 2,000 mAh battery. The Galaxy Grand has a standby time of 18.3 days while the Lumia 925 has a standby time of 18 days. I don’t think it would be fair to award this point to Samsung just because of a few hours.

This point is a draw.

Price

There is a major difference between both these smart phones as far as price is concerned. The Galaxy Grand can be purchased (free of contract) for around $ 340 the Lumia 925 costs a little more at $ 550 for the free of contract version. Even though the Lumia 925 is clearly the superior smart phone, is it really worth the extra $ 210? I think not.

This point goes to the Galaxy Grand as it provides better value for money.

Conclusion

So while the Nokia Lumia 925 wins this comparison by 4 points to 2, you have to wonder whether the Samsung Galaxy Grand is a better smart phone for its price. Like I said earlier, the Nokia Lumia 925 didn’t really get a chance to prove its worth since it was eclipsed by the Nokia Lumia 928 and Nokia Lumia 1020 and the Samsung Galaxy Grand didn’t really get too much promotion either. It was just there one day. But at the end of the day, if I had to choose between both these smart phones, I would go with the Nokia Lumia 925 unless it was out of my budget.
