I'm supporting an office that "enjoys" a paltry ADSL connection with speeds of 0.5/0.1Mbps and no cable in that street. 4G seems like a very attractive alternative, and we do have Sprint and Verizon 4G coverage.

I don't want WiFi or USB - I need 4G on one end, and an Ethernet jack with a public IP on the other, no routing/Firewall. The reason is our existing Netgear router/NAT - it has VPN and WAN fallback that I want to use. 3G fallback is a good option, too.

    Which hardware do you recommend:

    • Motorola CPEi25150 desktop modem - looked good until I read that it doesn't support bridge mode. Double-NAT operation is likely to prevent VPN.
    • USB U600 with an adapter from Cradlepoint, or Netgear MBRN3000. I wonder how robust this contraption is compared to a desktop/commercial-grade transceiver.
    • Are there any other 3rd-party WiMAX modems/gateways that I could legitimately use - ones that work on Sprint 4G, 3G, do Ethernet and bridge mode?

    Thanks!

Re: 4G modem with bridge mode?

Why cant you just get one of the 4G modems from Sprint, and have it wirelessly hookup to your existing equipment and save some hassle? Sprint 4G is truly unlimited, so you'd want to stay away from Verizon on that end. plus the clearwire/Sprint 4G is a more constant signal, using microwaves, its able to penetrate more structural elements like a building and has a larger radius, a standard cell tower has a workable/reliable signal at 15 miles max, the Sprint 4G system has a reliable working radius of 30 miles...

The WAN port of my router is wired Ethernet, not WiFi. Plus, as I said in the OP, VPN doesn't work well over NAT which these "MiFi" devices inherently employ.

I do agree that Sprint seems like the more attractive option.

we just switched from dsl to sprint 4g with mot 25150. It is very nice, about 5 - 8 mbps down and 1mbps up.

I turned dhcp off on the motorola, hooked it to my airport extreme with the dhcp on. all seems well for our 10 office computers.

Will move our voip from dsl to the 4g this weekend.
