I'm considering Straight Talk as my next provider. Probably getting their Samsung R810C. I'm curious how stripped down / locked down the Straight Talk phones are. Am I going to have to give them more money everytime I want a different ringtone / wallpaper / whatever? Or can I just make my own? What about apps? Can I use apps from anywhere, or only what they provide/sell? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I anticipate making the switch in the next few days.

Re: I need straight talk about Straight Talk

OK... After some research, I've answered most of my questions.

www (dot) straighttalk (dot) com/controller.block?__blockname=straight.static.terms is their terms and conditions page, broken out of that silly DHTML popup window they use.

    From their T&C:

Straight Talk Unlimited talk, text and data plan Features cannot be used: (1) for access to the Internet, intranets, or other data networks except as the device’s native applications and capabilities permit, or (2) for any applications that tether your device to laptops or personal computers other than for the use of Wireless Synch.

OK. Looks like I can't use third-party apps. Bummer. I was figuring on a fuel/distance/economy tracking app for the bike, among other ideas.

The Data Services you buy and download may only be used or viewed on the Straight Talk phone for which they were purchased and cannot be transferred to any other device, including a new or replacement Straight Talk phone. Data Services are non-refundable and non-transferable.

I haven't found any info that specifically addresses my concerns about graphics/ringtones. But this sure looks like they intend to get me coming and going.

International Roaming is strictly prohibited. Straight Talk does not offer international roaming or international long distance service. You will not be able to make or receive calls on your Straight Talk phone if you are traveling outside of the United States.

That's the deal-breaker for me. One of the main reasons I want to upgrade to an Internet-enabled phone is to check weather forcasts and radar when I'm out on a motorcycle trip. If I can't use that functionality or make an emergency call because I happen to be in Canada at the time, then I don't need their service.

Thanks for playing, Straight Talk. Better luck next time.

Like many pre-paid, its meant to just give people basic phone and text service. The web access is like a bonus, it is rather slow and not that useful. By not having international calling and roaming it keeps the price down for the 95% of us who dont need it.

But for those who dont leave the country, its been a great deal for us. We had T-Mobile, for a few years. The verion network that straight talk uses is much better than Tmobiles' ever was. We have good service now where we had none before. Text messages send almost instantly, it use to take about 5 seconds, not that big a deal but make it feel much faster.

It is a "basic" service. The phone service in my area is good. But that is about it. Don't look for any "extra" features.

All over this forum it says that straight talk operates off verizon towers. This is not true it operates off t-mobile/att here in Washington state. This is what is posted at the walmart stores.

Straight Talk added GSM coverage in the latter part of summer. Prior to that, they only offered cdma phones that operate on the Verizon network. So, depending on your location, you have a choice between CDMA or GSM.

    About Straight Talk

Before I purchase any item, I check blogs, comments, etc. I needed a Straight Talk cellphone and visited Wal-mart and ask questions that I already knew from reading different forums. I purchase a Samsung R355c and I never had any problems with it, plus am saving just by switching from my old cellphone company to ST. I had read that your old number could not be transferred or so I understood, but ST transferred the same number, with the difference that I am saving, not throwing my money away on hidden charges, like going over the minutes per month, that HELLO!! I think $300 is too much, but is their lost, I switch, saved, and for just $30 a month with 1000 min. of talk, text, free 411 calls and 30 mb is enough for me.

Re: I need straight talk about Straight Talk

Yo me cambie a ST y estoy ahorrando bastante.

I hope when you get a chance, you take a look at the recent free cell phone offers etc., being offered by Straight Talk at my families site

Straight Talk not only has some awesome free cell phone offers in August and September of 2011 but we list the new offers each month. My family of six all honestly use Straight Talk so the reviews are real.

Straight Talk has some new Smart Phones by Nokia which include Nokia E71 Smart Phone (See Photo Below). the Nokia 6790 Smart Phone and the Nokia E5 Smart Phone.

You can get ringtones, they are not free but not many prepaid cell phone or wireless pay as you go cell phone providers, offer ringtones for free. you can call Straight Talk customer service and the will answer any questions, they are very friendly and easy to work with.

Our new site Finer Find is beginning to list their offers as well.

Re: I need straight talk about Straight Talk

The OP has already probably purchased his phone but some things he should have known.
Straight Talk uses AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint and a slew of other carriers nation wide.
ST phones are by and large locked down but there are two maybe three phones that you can buy from them that have unlocked sim cards. These phones run on the ATT system possibly T-Mobile as well. Both phones are the Nokia smart phones. You can buy the phones, activate them, transfer the sim cards to any ATT android or IPhone.

Note. If you do this, DO NOT sell your Nokia phone to recoup money. The buyer of the phone can request a new sim for it, in which case ST will deactivate your current sim that was in the Nokia and you are out your investment.

IPhone conversion requires a sim trimmer to make the sim card work in the phone. Android phones the card just slides in. The sim card i the Nokias is in tight but they do come out. Once the sim is transfered the A or iphone will have talk and text, data and mms require changing the APN settings on the phone to work on STs service. All pretty easy, If I can do it any one can.
STs network is about as good as any other.

Also their is this. ST is coming out with their own Android phone in September. Which is cousin to one of the Boost Androids and the phone will run off the Sprint network.
With the new ST android you can make any song a ring tone or any picture a wall paper, as well as swapping the sim from the Nokia smart phones allows you what ever capabilities that particular phone has.
The advantage of the Android or IPhone is if you are out of your calling area but are near wifi you can make VOIP calls for free. Call quality is not the best but if your cell signal is out, any call is better than none at all.

Re: I need straight talk about Straight Talk

For anyone interested. Straight Talk is now shipping the Samsung Galaxy Precedent. Preorders are going out and they are showing up in WalMart stores. So far the stores reported are on the East coast but they are out.

A early user review is showing the phone to be a decent entry level Android. Who would have thought. Straight Talk selling an Android Phone.
