Hi All,
I've got the x-series silver add on with 3 on my K850i at the moment. I'd
like to be able to use the phone as a modem so I can get web access when I'm
out and about. Can I do this, and what do I need to ask for? 3 Customer
services seemed confused by my Dulcit Northern tones earlier when i was
trying to ask them..
thanks!

Yes you can do this, so long as you're on a data tarrif. You don't need
to ask them anything.

You can use it as a modem at the moment - just dial your ISP's number
as per usual. However, that's an awful slow and expensive way of doing
things. You really want to get your data directly from 3 ... but you
explicitly cannot do that on an X-series addon. You need mobile
broadband, which is another five or ten quid a month. Once you have it
you can use the magic dial up number, *99#.
Opinions seems varied about whether you can use mobile broadband to do
browsing or mobile mail on your phone. The T&Cs don't read that way,
but there have been reports from one poster at least saying it's
possible.

I'm in the same position - apparently you can dial through x-series but it's
not technically permitted and there are stories about people getting charged
out-of-allowance data for it. Personally I'm not aware of how they can tell
what device the data is being used on but I'm no expert.
As an aside, are you able to connect using HSDPA? I have a k850 on Three
also but since I don't have a data tarrif of any kind I'm unable to do any
speed tests. I suspect that I'm only connected at 300k or so.

3 have halved the price of the broadband offering for existing 3
customers, with free dongle.
The basic £10 package for 1GB is now £5.

On my N95 I was able to use it as a modem without my provider knowing.
If you're that paranoid you can just tunnel everything through ssh from
your laptop (which is what I did to hide certain services which were
blocked). However to get the HSDPA I had to subscribe to Mobile
broadband. So you can "just do it" in the words of Nike but it'll be so
damn slow you'll want to subscribe to the proper service (only cost me
an extra £5 anyway)
