Verizon telefone upgrade e questão de contrato?

Okay so long story short, I have a very old flip phone currently and the number is on a month by month add on to a family plan. On order to get an upgrade to another basic phone we have to get the two year contract and pay a 30 dollar upgrade fee. My question is if I buy another basic phone from Amazona, and then switch the number to it will I have to pay the upgrade fee. The reason why I as about Amazon is because when you go to buy it has selections and one is to upgrade your contract. What about if i bought it from perhaps Ebay? thank you in advance for all of your help.
