8110 Data Plan question

Can you buy the Pearl WITHOUT the data plan (internet, e-mail, etc)? Because my friend e-mailed me a link where I can get this phone (brand new) for free but I didn't know it had to have the data plan. Please respond, I'm leaning towards getting this phone. BTW, I understand that it defeats the purpose of getting a Blackberry phone if you don't get with internet. I'm just wondering if you CAN get the Pearl without it. Thanks in advance.

You can get the phone without a data plan, but you may want to read the fine print carefully. Sometimes they will not give you the mail-in-rebate if you do not sign up for the data package and sometimes there will be a different price for those not wanting the data package.
The BlackBerry is a E-mail driven device so you are right about defeating the purpose of having a BlackBerry, but you can also have your calender on the go with you, you can still sync with the computer to get all of you contacts, memos and tasks if you want and it is still a great phone for text messaging. You will need a text messaging plan if you are looking to do that but you do not need the data package to send text, only MMS.
