The Etisalat/SS8 Software apparently was found harmful to RIM devices. RIM has put out an official doc named "RIM Statement Regarding Etisalat/SS8 Software. It states that Etisalat did not release what was supposed to have been an update therefore being harmful to your RIM devices. RIM's documents addresses the following:
RIM confirms that this software is neither a patch nor an upgrade by RIM.
RIM had no dealings in developing this software app and was not involved in any way in testing or distributing the app.
RIM further confirms, in general terms, that a third party patch cannot provide any enhancements
to network services as there is no capability for third parties to develop or modify the low level
radio communications protocols that would be involved in making such improvements to the
communications between a BlackBerry smartphone and a carrier’s network.
RIM says that they use OTA for updates and do not use SMS or WAP.
