    Hi,

I just got a new Samsung Galaxy S phone from a local AT&T store in the US. I took the phone home the first day and spent a few hours scrolling thru the menus and getting familiar with the phone. I did a software update on the phone it has ver 2.1. I also went to a few websites to test the browser. I made about 3 calls and talked for about an hour. I had the phone turned on the entire time, I was not in standby mode.
After about 2 hours - the back of the phone where the battery is, started getting hot.

It didn't burn my hand but it was like holding a very hot cup of coffee in your hand. Very uncomfortable. Has anyone else had this problem with a battery getting hot?

Why is the battery overheating? I'm afraid to use the phone now, it might burn up something in the phone or ruin a memory card or something else.
What's causing the battery top get really hot? How do you fix this problem?

    Samsung Model # SGH I897 Build # Éclair.UCJH7 Firmware Ver. 2.1-update1
I have not Rooted my Phone.

I think there is really a problem with your phone or with your battery. If you check the specs of Samsung Galaxy S, you can find out that:

    Battery (Standard) Li-pol, 1,500mAh
Talk time: 2G/803 min, 3G/393 min.
Standby time: 2G/750 hrs, 3G/576 hrs.

    Apps such as WIFI and GPS & 4G will cause battery to heat up;
Turn them off when not in use.

I think that the battery getting hot is normal when the phone is in use for a long period of time. When I still have my iPhone 4 it also gets warm when I play games on it

That might also causing your battery to heat up. If you are using it for a very long time especially on call, playing games, or using any apps, surely it heat up.

I have the same phone, the Captivate and it over heats the same exact way. I try not to worry too much about it but it's hard to ignore the problem.

I feel my phone over heating when is charging or right after I charge.

I would take the phone to your local warranty center. ATT has one in each county. As long as the strips are white on the phone and battery then they should give you a replacement. I would try the battery first. If that doesn't fix the problem then have them replace the phone.

Most likely yo u have a App that has hung or is stalled when this happens it starts sucking battery like crazy.

Fix : download a app manager i use advanced task killer it will let you see all the apps running and either quickly close all of then or Force them closed so you dont have a hot hand while your battery drains.
