The number of Samsung cell phones that have been released in the last few months is outstanding. It looks like they are trying to stay on top using plain, brute force. I am greeted with news on a new Samsung cell phone almost every morning. It’s hard to think of cell phones without mentioning Samsung anymore. If that was the plan, I’d say, well done Samsung. Anyway, the focus of this comparison is going to be on one of the latest phablet releases from Samsung, the Galaxy Mega 6.3. We had done a comparison between the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 earlier and while the Galaxy S4 managed to win that race, the Galaxy Mega 5.8 did hold its ground. And now, with the larger screen Galaxy Mega 6.3 will the result be the same or are we in for a surprise?

    Size and weight

From the onset, we see exactly what the Galaxy Mega 6.3 was made for. This cell phone is huge at 167.6 x 88 x 8 mm and weighs 199 g. You will definitely know what’s in your hand. On the other hand, the Galaxy S4 is a lot smaller at 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm and weighs just 130 g. If you look at portability, the Galaxy S4 is a lot easier to carry around with you. But if you have an excel worksheet to go through with a couple of co-workers, you will suddenly have a new found appreciation for the large size of the Galaxy Mega 6.3. At the end of the day, size does count for something.

I can’t really award this point to either cell phone.

    Display

As above, both cell phones have their own pros and cons when it comes to display. While the Galaxy S4 has a 5.0” screen the Galaxy Mega 6.3 has a huge 6.3” screen. But, while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 comes with a TFT screen, the Galaxy S4 has a Super AMOLED screen. The pixel density on the Galaxy S4 is almost double that of the Galaxy Mega 6.3. But you do get more than an inch extra when it comes to the Galaxy Mega which counts for a lot.

The only logical conclusion to this point would be to share it. Both phones are winners.

    Memory & Storage

So far, the Galaxy Mega 6.3 has managed to keep up with the Galaxy S4 in all aspects. And that doesn’t seem like it’s going to change in this point either. The Galaxy S4 comes with 2 GB of RAM while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 comes with 1.5 GB of RAM. Both cell phones run quite smoothly and have no trouble handling multiple applications. Both cell phones are available with 16 GB of built in memory and while the Galaxy S4 is also available in 32 and 64 GB versions the only alternative with the Galaxy Mega 6.3 is an 8 GB version. Both phones also offer expandable memory options up to 64 GB. Even though the Galaxy Mega 6.3 is lacking a little in the built in memory department, there isn’t much to complain about.

Any phone that can offer more than 64 GB of total memory is definitely a winner. The point has to be a draw.

    Camera

Finally, the Galaxy S4 gets a chance to impress. We already know how the 13 MP camera on the Galaxy S4 is the best in the market today. There is little the measly 8 MP camera on the Galaxy Mega 6.3 can do about that. That’s right, I called the 8 MP camera “measly.” Why? Because almost every smart phone today has an 8 MP camera. While in the front camera department both cell phones have pretty much the same camera, the Galaxy S4 offers HD video recording which is lacking in the Galaxy Mega 6.3.

The Galaxy S4 still has the best camera in the market. 1 point to the S4.

    OS & Performance

Both these cell phones run on the latest Android operating system, 4.2.2 (JellyBean). The Galaxy Mega 6.3 has the same Nature UX user interface as the Galaxy S4 as well. In terms of performance, both are pretty similar too. Both have Qualcomm Snapdragon processors (although the Galaxy S4 has a slightly better one) and both run on the Adreno graphics processor (again the Galaxy S4 is slightly better). But, if you actually use both the phones, there is a marginal difference between them, surely not enough to declare one better than the other.

This is the fourth point which the Galaxy Mega 6.3 has managed to tie with the Galaxy S4.

    Battery

If you though the 2,600 mAh battery on the Galaxy S4 was big, wait till you hear about the battery on the Galaxy Mega 6.3. It has a 3,200 mAh battery. But still I get the feeling that the battery performance will be the same among both these phones.

If anybody was getting this point it was the Galaxy Mega 6.3. This must be the first point where the Galaxy S4 is happy with a draw.

    Price

And finally the price. The Galaxy Mega 6.3 is available for around $ 610 in the market today. This means it is around $ 80 cheaper than the Galaxy S4. And when you look back at this comparison you will realize, the only thing you are really paying for is the camera. So is it worth it?

The point goes to the Galaxy Mega 6.3. You want a reason? I can give you 80.

    Conclusion

After comparing both these amazing smart phones in 7 categories, the score is tied at 1 all. This just shows you how similar they both are. I haven’t even awarded the Galaxy Mega 6.3 for its bigger display and battery. Would you really want to spend an extra $ 80 for a smart phone with a smaller display and a larger camera? If you are looking for a cheaper alternative for the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy Mega 6.3 is as close as you can get.
