Was it really worth releasing two Samsung Galaxy Mega smart phones just a month apart? One obvious difference between both is the screen size which is clearly noticeable from the names of the phones, the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 (which comes with a 5.8” screen) and the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 (which comes with a 6.3” screen). These phones don’t seem to be getting the publicity they deserve and have quickly fallen into the dark recesses of the smart phone world. Were these two smart phones really necessary? Read on to find out...

Size and weight

This is pretty much the biggest difference between both these smart phones. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 measures 162.6 x 82.4 x 9 mm while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 measures 167.6 x 88 x 8 mm. I, for one, am confused with these measurements. I mean, couldn’t the Galaxy Mega 5.8 have been 8 mm thick as well? Then why 9 mm? The weight difference between these phones is pretty much understandable. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 weighs 182 g while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 weighs 199 g. 17 g isn’t a lot and is something I can live with.

I guess this point should be a draw.

Display

When it comes to display there is a remarkable difference between both these smart phones. It’s not only the obvious size difference that sets them apart. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 comes with a 5.8” TFT touch screen while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 comes with a 6.3” Super Clear LCD touch screen. The shocker here is that the Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a maximum resolution of just 960 x 540 pixels. That is extremely low for a 5.8” screen. The Galaxy Mega 6.3 does just a little better with a maximum resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels. Both phones are way off track when it comes to pixel density though. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a pixel density of 190 ppi while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 has a pixel density of 233 ppi. I feel that releasing a smart phone with a pixel density less than 300 is quite daring. What do you think?

This point will have to be given to the Galaxy Mega 6.3. Simply because 190 ppi is too little for a smart phone being released in 2013.

Memory & Storage

In terms of RAM both these smart phones are identical. Both run on 1.5 GB of RAM. Samsung has always been quite generous when it comes to storage and expansion options and while the same flexibility isn’t seen here, both these smart phones still offer more options than most other smart phones in the market. Both smart phones support memory expansion through microSD, micro SDHC and micro SDXC up to 64 GB. And while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 comes in an 8 GB and 16 GB version the Galaxy Mega 5.8 comes in only an 8 GB version.

It would be unfair to award this point to either smart phone as no matter which smart phone you buy, the memory will not be disappointing.

Camera

Both these smart phones are identical when it comes to the camera on the back and on the front. Both phones have an 8 MP camera on the back which can click some decent pictures. They both come with an LED flash as well. Both smart phones even come with a 1.9 MP camera on the front. One notable difference though is that the Galaxy Mega 6.3 offers video recording at 1,920 x 1,080 1080p HD.

The Galaxy Mega 6.3 just about manages to win this point.

OS & Performance

If you’re thinking there is going to be a huge difference here, prepare to be disappointed. Both smart phones run on Android 4.2 with Samsung’s Nature UX user interface. The interface is quite modern but in terms of performance, both smart phones are far from satisfactory. Both smart phones run on Dual core processors and while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 has a clock rate of 1700 MHz the Galaxy mega 5.8 has a clock speed of 1500 MHz. If you’re going in for either of these smart phones, don’t expect an amazing performance.

It would be unfair to award this point to either smart phone. Therefore, it’s a draw.

Battery

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 comes with a 2,600 mAh battery while the Galaxy mega 6.3 comes with a 3,200 mAh battery. So that means the Galaxy Mega 6.3 should have a longer lasting battery shouldn’t it? Well no. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a standby time of 18.3 days while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 has a stand by time of 17.5 days. How is that possible? Maybe because of the Super Clear LCD? This just proves that size doesn’t always matter.

The point goes to the Galaxy Mega 5.8 because it provides a better battery life with a smaller battery.

Price

Finally, the price. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 can be purchased without contract for around $ 450 while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 can be purchased without contract for around $ 520. Both smart phones are quite competitively priced aren’t they? That’s good or else I don’t think too many people would be buying them anyway.

In terms of value for money, I would have to say that the Galaxy Mega 5.8 should be allotted this point.

Conclusion

There you have it folks, Samsung has managed to release two smart phones each with their own pros and cons. The final score reads 2-2 with the Galaxy Mega 6.3 having a better display and Full HD recording while the Galaxy Mega 5.8 picked up points for its price and battery life. I think it would have been so much better if Samsung had combined the pros from both these smart phones and just released one Galaxy Mega. I’m sure that single smart phone would have sold more than both these individual smart phones put together.
