Check the Amount of SD Card Space:

  1. From the home screen, tap "Apps"
  2. Open "Settings" and swipe to "System"
  3. Tap "Storage" and you can view the "Available space" value under "SD card"

Formatting the SD Card:

WARNING! When formatting the SD card, all data stored on it will be deleted. If necessary, create backups before proceeding.

  1. Tap "Apps" while on the home screen
  2. Tap "Settings" and swipe to "System"
  3. Tap "Storage"
  4. Under "SD card", tap "Format SD Card"
  5. Tap "Format SD Card" again to confirm
  6. Press "Delete all"

Opening or Deleting SD Card Files

Using the Smartphone:

  1. Tap "Apps" from the home screen
  2. Launch the "My files" app
  3. Swipe to "Local storage" and tap "SD card"
  4. Tap a file or folder to open it
  5. To delete files, tap "SD memory card" and tap "Menu"
  6. Then, tap "Select" and mark the check boxes next to the files you wish to delete
  7. Tap "Done" > "OK"

Using a Windows Computer:

  1. Connect the Galaxy Alpha to your computer
  2. Swipe the "Status" bar down
  3. Tap "USB connected" > "Connect USB storage"
  4. From the AutoPlay window on the PC, click "Open folder to view files"
  5. Open the "Card" drive to explore the external storage
  6. Open or delete the desired files
  7. When done, tap "Disconnect storage from PC"

Using a Mac:

NOTE: Skip the first 2 steps if Samsung Kies is already installed on your Mac

  1. Open the Internet browser on your Mac
  2. Visit Kies and click "Download for Mac OS"
  3. Perform any additional self-explanatory steps to install Kies on your Mac
  4. Connect the Galaxy Alpha to your Mac via USB
  5. Swipe the "Status" bar down on the smartphone
  6. Tap "Connected as a media device" and mark the "Media device" check box
  7. Open Kies and click the "Folder" icon next to "External memory"
  8. Open a file stored on the SD by double-clicking it
  9. To remove a folder or a file, mark the check box next to it, click the "Trash can" icon and click "OK" to confirm
  10. When ready, safely remove the smartphone from the mac, by first ejecting its drive

File Transfer

Transferring Files from the SD Card to the Internal Storage:

  1. Tap "Apps" while viewing the home screen
  2. Open "My Files"
  3. Swipe to "Local storage" and tap "SD card"
  4. Tap "SD memory card"
  5. Locate the desired files / folders and mark the check boxes associated with those that you wish to transfer
  6. Tap "Menu" and select "Move" or "Copy"
  7. Tap "Drive storage" and navigate to where the files should be transferred
  8. Tap "Paste here" or "Move here"

Transferring Files from the Internal Storage to the SD Card:

  1. Open the "My Files" application
  2. Swipe to "Local storage" and then select "Device storage"
  3. Navigate to the files you wish to transfer to the external storage
  4. Mark the check boxes next to the files and folders you wish to transfer
  5. Tap "menu" and select "Move" or "Copy"
  6. Select "SD memory card"
  7. Navigate to where you wish to transfer the files and tap "Paste here" or "Move here"

Setting the Default Memory Location for Applications

NOTE: The majority of pre-loaded applications will use the phone's internal storage for saving app data, by default. However, you can change this setting so that apps will use the SD card for storing data instead.

Change the Camera App's Storage Settings:

  1. Launch the "Camera" application
  2. Tap "Settings" from the viewfinder
  3. Tap "Storage" and select "Memory card"

Change the Voice Recorder's Settings:

  1. From the home screen, tap "Apps"
  2. Open "Voice recorder"
  3. Tap "Settings" > "Storage"
  4. Tap "Memory Card"

Change the Internet App's Settings:

  1. Tap "Apps" from the home screen and launch "Internet"
  2. Press "Menu" and tap "Settings"
  3. Swipe to "Advanced" and tap "Content settings"
  4. Tap "Default storage" and select "SD card"

Change the Storage Location for Nearby Devices (DLNA):

  1. Go to the phone's "Settings" menu
  2. Swipe to "Connect and Share" and tap "Nearby devices"
  3. Set the "Nearby devices" switch to "ON"
  4. Tap "Download to" and select "SD Card"
