WARNING! When you factory reset your device, all personal data located on the phone’s internal memory will be lost. This includes media files, ringtones, downloaded content, contacts, applications etc. In addition, all settings will be restored to factory values.
NOTE: Data stored on the SIM and SD cards will not be affected by the reset. For instructions on how to back up and restore personal data on the local storage, visit this thread.
Factory Reset via Settings:
- Open the apps drawer
- Launch “Settings”
- Under “Personal”, tap “Backup and reset”
- Optionally, enable or disable “Restore” and “Back up my data”
- Tap “Factory data reset”
- Tap “Reset device” and provide your lock screen password / PIN / pattern if necessary
- Tap “Continue” > “Delete all” to confirm
Factory Reset via Recovery (Hardware Buttons):
NOTE: If your phone freezes, crashes, or otherwise prevents you from resetting it via settings, you can try resetting the phone via Android System Recovery. The Recovery menu can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses.
- If necessary, turn off the phone
- Press and hold “Power”, “Home”, and “Volume Up” at the same time
- At the “Samsung” logo, release “Power”
- At the “Android” logo, release “Volume Up” and “Home” as well
- Wait to gain access to the Recovery menu (it may take 1-2 minutes)
- Once in the menu, navigate it using “Volume down”
- Highlight “Wipe data / factory reset” and press “Power” to select the highlighted option
- Press “Volume down” to highlight “Yes – delete all user data”
- Press “Power” to select the option
- After the phone finishes resetting, “Reboot system now” will be highlighted
- Press “Power” to select the highlighted option and restart your phone
Check for OS Updates:
NOTE: Once you have reset the phone, it’s recommended to check if new software updates are available for download. To do this:
- Tap “Apps” on the home screen
- Open “Settings”
- Scroll to, and tap “About device”
- Verify if a new update is available. If so, follow the on-screen prompts to download and apply it
