In advance of my post here, i want to say that i sure hope that this problem is not due to my not subscribing to the verizon "v-cast" thing.
A three-week old Samsung SCH-A950 with a brand new Sandisk 512Mb transflash card....
Inserted the card into the phone, then took it back out and got my cardreader on my PC and looked at the card. Saw four directories; MY_PIX, MY_FLIX, MY_MUSIC, and i think MY_TONES. So i copied a single mp3 (named ABCD.MP3) into the MY_MUSIC folder, safely unattached the cardreader and then inserted the card back into the phone. Went to the "my music" area, and it says "no music". Closed the phone, held down the "play" button, and it says "no songs available". "Manage Memory", "card memory" shows the card with about 3.5Kb used like it should. Reformatted the card on my PC and started all over again with the same result. Copied another ten mp3s to the MY_MUSIC folder, still "no songs available". Made a folder called My_MP3S (the Samsung doc says that is the folder name, but i guess thats out of date), and put MP3s in there too. Nothing works.
Took a deep breath. Now i'm here. Certainly i've missed something and i'm a goofball, i hope. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Your Phone will not play MP3's. You have to convert them to WMA files using Media Player 10.

mp3 on a950
quoted from verizon site.
Verizon Wireless yesterday added the Samsung SCH-a950 to its lineup. The red accented clamshell is a decently equipped handset priced in the mid-range.
Features of the Samsung A950 include:
EV-DO high-speed access
1.3 megapixel camera
Bluetooth, crippled see below for details
MicroSD (TransFlash) card slot
MP3 player with music control keys on handset

The instruction manual talks about MP3s and a folder named MY_MP3S, yet the folder is actually named MY_MUSIC. I definately have an MP3 in that folder and the phone definately says "no songs available".

Do have the v-cast thing in your verizon contract? i.e. you're paying extra for v-cast and therefore it unlocks the mp3 player?

My phone does not play MP3's period. When I add MP3s to my transflash card I get the same thing. "No songs found". When I convert them to WMA files it works fine.

WMA is better cause its a smaller file therefor saves you memory on your phone. Mp3 is, I believe the largest music file available. So, basically, your better off with WMA's. Most people will tell you to convert your music files into WMA to compress them and make them smaller, saving you room on your phone. =)

With the size of memory cards getting bigger all the time. something tells me that most people don't have the time to listen to that many songs on their phone, or their battery will run down
I still don't know why the .mp3's won't play on BPOE's phone from the card..

From http://estore.vzwshop.com/vcastMusic/faq.html#abouta
Q. What will happen to the MP3 player on my LG VX8100 or Samsung SCH-a950 phone if I upgrade to V CAST Music?
A. Phones Purchased Prior to 1/16/06: The native MP3 player on your phone will be removed and the V CAST Music application will be installed on your phone. This means that you will no longer be able to play songs in MP3 format, as the MP3 player will have been removed. Please see below for step-by-step instructions on how to convert your MP3 songs to WMA format for playback on your new V CAST Music phone.
Phones Purchased on or after 1/16/06: Your new LG VX8100 or Samsung SCH-a950 will already have the V CAST Music application installed. These phones do not have native MP3 playback capability. Please see below for step-by-step instructions on how to convert your MP3 songs to WMA format for playback on your new V CAST Music phone.Last edited by adhall; 02-08-2006 at 10:37 AM.

Golden information, thanks!
I should have known something was up, because my music folder is not called MY_MP3S.
I bought my phone on 1/19/06. Lovely!
Is there a better util than windoze media player (mentioned above) for converting to wma?
This just in; windows media player 10 only installs in windows XP! So i get a new phone and i found out its mp3 player was removed, and to convert mp3s to wmas i have to find a windows XP box (don't own one, don't easily have access to one) and blah blah blah blah freakin blah! (sorry about that).
I wonder if i can flash my phone to the non v-cast firmware?Last edited by bpoe; 02-08-2006 at 11:59 AM.

Luckily there are gobs of MP3->WMA converters out there. I did one quickly and put it on the card and now i have music.
Put a little one in MY_SOUNDS with hopes of making a ringtone, but apparently ringtones are yet another format, not WMA.
