WTF | 1st thing, no reason you should have to hold the card at all for any reason. Does the card not click into place like it should? I know on my Sync it's nearly impossible to get the card to seat by using your fingers, I had to use a dime to get it to click into place. Once you get the card in you have to format it, did you do that? I had a hell of a time trying to figure out how to do that but finally got it.
Go to "my stuff", select "options", select "memory card settings", select "format". This will prepare your card for use in your phone. Once you do that you should be able to do what you want.
If you're having to hold the card with your finger, either you didn't push it in all the way or the phone is defective since it won't allow the card to click into place.

While it may very well be possible that it does as you say, given the issue the OP is having, manually formatting the card surely can't hurt.
