Help with connecting phone to computer

Hi, I just got a Samsung Gleam about a month ago. I am really trying to like this phone...but...

Anyway, I bought a USB cord off of Ebay. Then, I downloaded the drivers from the Samsung website.

When I plug the phone into the computer, the computer recognizes and says that it has found new hardware. So, I know the cord isn't shot.

However, when I open up the software from the Samsung site, it always says that the phone is not connected. I have tried everything and it will never connect the phone. Does anyone have any advice??
