The Samsung Galaxy S4 is doing pretty well in the market even months after its release. But, Samsung has gone all out with the Galaxy S4 series when it comes to competing with Sony, Nokia, Apple, etc. They have released 2 unique versions of the Galaxy S4 namely the Galaxy S4 Active and the Galaxy S4 Zoom. Both these smart phones are supposed to have unique features which better equip them to compete with other top end smart phones. But before I start comparing these smart phones with rival smart phones from other manufacturers, let’s find out what new features they have. Here I will be comparing the Samsung Galaxy S4 with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active. Did Samsung really need to release a separate smart phone with these so called “unique” features? Read on to find out...

    Size and weight

When it comes to size and weight, it appears Samsung took a big step back with their new smart phone the Galaxy S4 Active. While other manufacturers are constantly working to reduce the size and weight of their smart phones, the Galaxy S4 Active is the perfect example of what you wouldn’t want to do when you’re introducing a new smart phone. The Galaxy S4 Active measures 139.7 x 71.3 x 9.1 mm and weighs 151 g. That is quite bulky for Samsung considering the Galaxy S4 measures 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.90 mm and weighs just 130 g.

This is a big step back for Samsung. The Galaxy S4 gets this point.

    Display

In terms of display the Galaxy S4 Active is a much better smart phone. The Galaxy S4 Active comes with a 5.0” TFT touch screen which provides an amazing pixel density of 443 ppi. That is actually a couple pixels more than the 5.0” Super AMOLED touch screen on the Galaxy S4 that comes with a pixel density of 443 ppi. If you put both these smart phones side by side, you will barely be able to notice a difference between the displays on both smart phones.

It would be unfair to avoid this point to either smart phone. This one’s a draw.

    Memory & Storage

There is very little to separate both these smart phones when it comes to memory and storage. The Galaxy S4 runs on 2 GB of RAM and comes with 16, 32 or 64 GB of user memory. The Galaxy S4 Active also runs on 2 GB of RAM while it has just 11.25 GB of user memory. This is pretty much the only difference between both these smart phones and is not good enough to award the point to either. Both smart phones also allow memory expansion up to 64 GB.

This point is a draw as well.

    Camera

This is another area where the Galaxy S4 Active disappoints. We all know how great the 13 MP camera on the Galaxy S4 is and you wouldn’t be wrong if you believed that the 8 MP camera on the Galaxy S4 Active wasn’t as good. Both these smart phones support video recording at 1080p though the Galaxy S4 Active does not all video recording in HD through its front camera. The features available for the camera of the Galaxy S4 Active are significantly lesser as well. The only thing worth complimenting the Galaxy S4 Active about is the fact that it allows for photography under water.

I don’t know how good the underwater photography capabilities of the Galaxy S4 Active are though and I have only heard bad things about it. Keeping that in mind, the point goes to the Galaxy S4.

    (Samsung Galaxy S4 - Two / Samsung Galaxy S4 Active - Zero)

    OS & Performance

This is a point where both these smart phones are exactly the same. Both these smart phones run on Quad core, 1900 MHz, Krait 300 processors. Both smart phones also have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 AP8064T chip and run on Adreno 320 graphics processors. There really isn’t much more you could want from your smart phone in terms of performance. Both smart phones run on the latest Android operating system, 4.2.2 JellyBean as well.

Considering the fact that both these smart phones are exactly the same, it’s quite obvious that this point will be a draw.

    (Samsung Galaxy S4 - Two / Samsung Galaxy S4 Active - Zero)

    Battery

Once again, both these smart phones have exactly the same 2,600 mAh battery. What’s interesting to know though is that the Galaxy S4 claims to have a stand by time of 15.4 days while the Galaxy S4 Active claims to have a stand by time of 13.3 days. Maybe that has something to do with the Super AMOLED screen? I’m getting a feeling Samsung missed a couple of steps with the Galaxy S4 Active.

Here too, the point goes to the Galaxy S4.

    (Samsung Galaxy S4 - Three / Samsung Galaxy S4 Active - Zero)

    Price

I feel that the price of a smart phone goes a long way in deciding whether you buy it or not. But it can’t really be used as a deciding factor here. Why? Well, that’s because the Galaxy S4 costs around $ 690 while the Galaxy S4 Active costs $ 680. $ 10 isn’t something worth writing home about. And when you see that the Galaxy S4 is already leading this comparison with 3 points to 0 I think any logical consumer would prefer paying the additional $ 10 and picking up the Galaxy S4.

I guess this point should be a draw as both these smart phones are similarly priced although in terms of value for money the Galaxy S4 should definitely get the point.

    Conclusion

At the end of this comparison I really don’t know what to say about the Galaxy S4 Active. The Samsung Galaxy S4 proves that Samsung got it right the first time. I know that the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is suppose to be water proof up to 1 meter for 30 minutes and dust proof as well but I don’t see many consumers buying it since Samsung doesn’t offer a warranty against water damage for the Galaxy S4 Active. I guess Samsung isn’t really confident of their product and that is never a good sign. I for one, would never go for the Galaxy S4 Active over the Galaxy S4.
