There seem to be some very informed participants and moderators in this forum. I need to know where the ESN is located and if it is possible to purchase a used phone with a bad ESN and then move the ESN from my broken Katana over to that phone. My skills only extend to moving socketed chips etc. Thank you for any help.

I don't have Sprint anymore, but I always thought it was located behind the battery.

The ESN is located under the battery.

On the Katana models, it's actually the HEX number
    --------------------------------------------------
    Model: Katana
    FCC ID: XXXSCP-66H (example)

    DEC: 00601###### (example)
    HEX: 061E4### ## (example)
    --------------------------------------------------
    Model: Katana LX
    FCC ID: XXXSCP-3800 (example)

    DEC: 268435############ (example)
    HEX: A00000120E#### ## (example)
    --------------------------------------------------
    Model: Katana II
    FCC ID: XXXSCP-6650

    HEX: A00000051##### ## (example)

As for "moving the ESN number" over, the Sanyo's use a specialized screw driver that can't be purchased in normal stores. eBay is the only place i have found them.

You can't just move the/a chip over, the entire system board has to go.
There are software programs available that offer ESN/HEX/MEID changing, such as CDMA workshop. I have this software, and it works great. But, to be able to use the software, you have to buy it, which is about $115 USD.
