help with firmware / software

hi, i've been browsing this forum and i've read some threads about firmware / software .. and to be honest, i don't really understand what they are :P so if anybody could help me out, that would be great!

1. what is firmware / software?
2. how do i find out which version my phone has (i have a T610)
3. how do i upgrade it?

1. firmware is the operating system on your phone, much like windows on your computer.

3. go to cingular and have them upgrade it or buy a copy on ebay, get a data cable, and it will walk you through it. but that removes many of the features that cingular adds. like i have edge technology, but if i did a firmware upgrade from ebay, it would most likely remove that ability.

you can check your firmware version , coloure ,vibrat and and time in stand by mode you can test your earphone keypad it works or not
