In another area of this forum I posted my dissapointment with Cingular after my home was flooded a few days ago and my phone (that I just got in August) was damaged and no "break" on a replacement form was offered. I am now seriously considering buying a phone on my own...unlocked...but I have a question... Are all SIM cards universal? Do I have to stay with the same brand of phone (I like the Sony Ericcson and would opt to get another one if I could) or can I go with another? I am looking for the least expensive phone that is compatible (not a serious talker). Also, does water damage a SIM card? Thanks in advance for replies.

Yes SIM cards should be compatible on any GSM network. so from what i understand, if it reads a sim card, and you can successfully unlock it, your card will work just fine. however some features may not work. ie i had an lg1150 with At&t service and mmode unlocked and was using cingular service through it. everything worked except I could not get the webbrowser or WPA to function. Anyone got ideas as to why that happened?

I just ran across this post and thought I'd give my two cents since I happen to work for Cingular. First of all, I know the situation you're in. All Cingular phones come with a one year warranty which covers pretty much everything except water damage (i.e., your flood) so I imagine you felt pretty screwed when they told you that you had to re-buy another phone at full retail price (where as a Razr introductory price is around $100 with a contract, we sell it for $360 at full retail).
As far as the SIMS/Smart Chips go, no, they're not universal as anyone who went through the AT&T/Cingular can attest to. Different SIMs are locked to different networks and won't be compatible so your Cingular SIM wont work if you go and find a cheap phone at T-Mobile. So here is what I tell people in your situation: Go on ebay and look for an unlocked (make sure its unlocked, otherwise it wont be compatible with Cingular) phone of your choice and pop your SIM in- its by far the cheapest route. Oh, and in my personal experience, my SIM survived water damage so yours might as well.
