w810i: why don't my mp3s work for ringtones?

i just bought a cingular w810i to replace my w600i and I transferred all my media to the new phone and i can't use any of my mp3's as ringtones as i was able to with the w600. I can use them as alarm or message tones, but not as a ringtone. is there a way to change this?

The W810i's that are branded to Cingular cannot use MP3's as ringtones. This was done by Cingular. One way to use your selected music as ringtones is to convert them to WMA. Another is to just debrand the firmware to the original manufacturers setting.

Re: w810i: why don't my mp3s work for ringtones?

You can debrand the phone by flashing the phone's firmware. You can Google davinci or wotan, and you can go from there. If you're not comfortable with doing this, you can find a person or business in your area to do it for you. Just look in the classifieds, craigslist, etc. Keep in mind that when you debrand the phone, you void the warranty. But one thing is, if you're going to have the phone replaced by Cingular, just flash the firmware again to the Cingular version.

Re: w810i: why don't my mp3s work for ringtones?

For those that find that debranding is too much of a hassle - I found it was, there is a solution. The reason Cingular have disabled the MP3 ringtone feature, is because they want you to only use the ringtones you buy off them. Those ones will work because they're encrypted to work. The ringtones need to be converted to "DRM" before they are accepted to use as actual ringtones. Don't worry - it dosn't differ the sound in any way, it simply removes the encryption if you like...

Bizzarely, the Nokia Moile Internet Tool Kit 4.1 does this for you!? It's a free app so there's nothing stopping you giving it a go. This site gives you a guide of how to do it. Good luck !

Re: w810i: why don't my mp3s work for ringtones?

Hey, I just got the w810i yesterday from cingular, and I've encoded my mp3's into .dm files, but it still doesn't work. I've tried both forward-lock and combined delivery, but neither worked. This is driving me crazy and I have no idea what's wrong. Is it just a new security feature cingular added or what? On my phone the song shows the mp3 symbol and a key symbol next to it, but it doesn't work! All the mp3's or ringtones that came with the phone show the mp3 symbol and a symbol that looks like the phone next to it...anyone know why my phone isn't accepting these ringtones? Thanks, any help is much appreciated!

what i have found to work was to take the song you want and use an audio editing program, like Adobe Audition or Sony Acid Pro, and re-encode to mp3 format using: 96kbps bit rate, 22kHz sample rate, and 2 channels (stereo). I tried bumping the bit rate up to 128, but the phone doesn't like it as a ringtone. Hope this helps.

Re: w810i: why don't my mp3s work for ringtones?

Yeah I just resorted to doing that. I just used audacity and cut the clip I wanted as my ringtone, then just lowering the bitrate to 112, which sounds perfectly fine. It seems to be working this way, and it's pretty simple, so I'll probably just stick with this method thanks for the help!

if i start with a high quality sample, it is difficult to tell a difference (if any) between 96 and 128 with the W800's speakers.

I used to do that with .amr files. I'd set the bitrate as 320kbps, then I'd decrease it down and it would sound a tiny bit better. The only problem was, that .amr files never sounded very nice whatever the bitrate was! For .mp3 files though, this method probably gives some nice results.

Re: w810i: why don't my mp3s work for ringtones?

I had called cingular on this when i gt my phone and the Tech guy told me that my mp3's could be no larger than 600kb to be used as ringtones... so use an mp3 clipping program to make your ringtones..

Re: w810i: why don't my mp3s work for ringtones?

to be onest with you i've tried every thing that was said on this forum and others about this ringtone problem; i converted the mp3 into dm files ,on my computer and directly into the phone, i saved the mp3 with adobe audition 2.0 in lower quality like it was said(22 Mhz, 96KBs, stereo) and nothing worked.
So i tried to simply to short the file to a size smaller then 600 Kb and it worked.it gives you about 35-40 secounds off music and for a ringtone is more then enough
I asome that is different for every phone company.mine was a cingular -
w810i bought in usa.so if you have a cingular phone is not encoded they just limited the size of the file for ringotens.
