Calling someone and hearing a ringtone?

Hi, I have a question.

I called someone today and instead of hearing the usual ringringring*, I heard some sort of music, it's as if they set it up themselves. I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this? Maybe it's call waiting?

Thanks

Re: Calling someone and hearing a ringtone?

sometimes due to call saturation within a network a call signal is passed through a devergance circuit, this at times will result in the hearing of music or even news etc

Re: Calling someone and hearing a ringtone?

Well actually, in Asia, we have the option to pay a very very minimal money to the phone operator to choose (and change) ringtone for incoming calls. So instead of "ring' "ring" we will listen to music when calling friends.. And it has been years....

Re: Calling someone and hearing a ringtone?

Well i know for sure its not because the line is too busy, because the music i hear is like hip hop and stuff, like the one my friend listens to. Doesnt seem like operator would play that kind of music.

Re: Calling someone and hearing a ringtone?

Glad my first post is something I know about! I personally haven't heard or used a song as a ring yet, but here in Canada Rogers has something called Caller Ring Trax. I'm going to paste some info right from their site, which explains it all.

Caller Ring Trax™ | $3.00/month

Caller Ring Trax is a new way to personalize your wireless service. It replaces the standard "ring ring" sound that friends and family hear when they call you and wait for you to pick up. You can choose a song for someone special calling you as well as choose something funny for a group of friends.

Choose from original artist recordings including Hip Hop, Pop, Rock, Comedy and lots more. You can also play different audio content depending on time of day.

Pricing: Caller Ring Trax is $3/month. Subscribe today and get your FIRST MONTH FREE! Caller Ring Trax tunes cost $2/each. Your first tune is FREE!

Personally, I don't think I would pay that much though. If you could pay a one time fee of $2 per song, I might, but you still have to pay for the subscription to the service. I just came back to Rogers after using MTS for a few years, and I see their musicstore is similar. You have to have a subscription or any songs you've purchased from them won't play on your computer or phone - even those you previously paid for. That sucks, but that's how they get money from you!

I'm sure other providers might have something similar. Good Luck!

Re: Calling someone and hearing a ringtone?

I do believe what you're hearing is, like other members suggested, a custom calling tone that others can hear. We have this Service in the UK too, so it might be worth checking with your operator to see if they support custom call tones if you're interested

Re: Calling someone and hearing a ringtone?

There called ringback tones well at least for verizon. I have them on my phone, you can customize them all different ways. Example If your friend has a fav song, you can set it up to where everytime they call it will come on for them.

Re: Calling someone and hearing a ringtone?

It seems like a pretty cool thing, Like Bluetwishy said, Rogers offers it as something you can add on to your plan.
I know Bell in Canada offers it too, my friend's plan came with the music. Honestely, it's not worth it in my opinion. Why not just listen to normal music? And plus, if your musics too good, people'll start calling you non-stop just to listen to music! LOL jk
