If you go back to 2007, what we call “Sony” today was known as “Sony Ericsson.” And let’s face it; they weren’t the best out there. Motorola, on the other hand, was right on top with the best of them in 2007. But now in 2013, the tables have turned. Sony has built a name for itself in the smart phone segment while Motorola has lost its way somewhere in between. But is Sony really better than Motorola? Here, I am going to compare the Sony Xperia Z with the new Motorola Moto X. Well, Motorola showed promise against the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One. Will it do as well here? Read on to find out...

    Size and weight

When it comes to size and weight both these smart phones have their own advantages and disadvantages. The Moto X measures 129.3 x 65.3 x 10.40 mm and weighs 130 g. The only thing I can complain about is the thickness. I mean, 10.40 mm is a little too thick compared to similar smart phones. The Xperia Z measures 139 x 71 x 7.90 mm and weighs 143 g. I can forgive them for the length and width since the display is a little larger and the smart phone is quite outstanding at just 7.90 mm. The only complain is the weight which is a little high at 143 g. It really isn’t much of a complaint though as there are many heavier smart phones out there.

This one should be a draw.

    Display

The Moto X comes with a 4.7” AMOLED touch screen and a pixel density 316 ppi. The Xperia Z comes with a 5.0” TFT touch screen and a pixel density of 443 ppi. So, the Xperia Z definitely has a better pixel density and has a slightly larger display. But it uses TFT technology in its touch screen which drains the battery and is outdated in my opinion. The pixel density on the Moto X is respectable though I don’t think it’s going to win any awards.

Sony manages to pick up this point only because of its superior pixel density.

    Memory & Storage

The Moto X comes in 16 and 32 GB versions while the Xperia Z comes only in a 16 GB version. The only advantage the Xperia Z has though is that it allows memory expansion up to 32 GB. You might think that it’s only 16 GB more than the Moto X but what you need to understand is that with memory expansion you can keep replacing your micro SD card and technically have infinite storage while with inbuilt storage you are restricted to the smart phones internal storage. There isn’t much competition in terms of memory though with both smart phones coming with 2 GB of RAM.

This point will go to the Xperia Z because it offers expandable memory.

    Camera

I am quite surprised with the camera that comes on the Moto X. It is a 10 MP camera with LED flash and Full HD video recording at 60 fps. I can’t imagine how Motorola was able to include video recording at 60 fps in their smart phone either. The Xperia Z comes with a superior 13 MP camera which also supports Full HD recording. The Moto X also comes with a 2 MP front facing camera while the Xperia Z comes with a 2.2 MP front facing camera.

I would really like to call this one a draw but the Xperia Z simply has the better camera and offers many more features as well.

    OS & Performance

Both these smart phones run on the latest Android operating system 4.2.2 JellyBean. And this is the first comparison where Motorola aren’t so outdated when it comes to technology. The Xperia Z comes with a Quad Core, 1500 MHz, Krait processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 chip while the Moto X comes with a Dual Core, 1700 MHz, Krait processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro MSM8960 (Motorola X8) chip. This isn’t the first Sony smart phone and there really isn’t any reason for them to still be using technology from 2012. Honestly, no flagship smart phone should still be running on technology from 2012.

Both these smart phones are disappointing here and even with Motorola’s unique twist on the system chip this one is definitely a draw.

    Battery

The battery on the Xperia Z is quite impressive at 2,330 mAh and it offers a stand by time of 22.9 days. That is truly amazing for a smart phone. But you can trust Motorola to come out with something that no one has done before. The 2,200 mAh battery on the Moto X has a mind boggling stand by time of 24 days. It makes you wonder, if Sony had an AMOLED screen instead of a TFT, would they have been able to have a longer stand by time?

The Moto X picks up its first point here.

    Price

The Xperia Z is available free of contract for around $ 640. That is pretty decent considering the smart phone is water proof and dust proof. But, the Moto X is rumored to be priced along $ 700 which is way too high for a smart phone that is not really the best phone out there today.

This point goes to the Xperia Z as well.

    (Motorola Moto X - One / Sony Xperia Z - Four)

    Conclusion

Even though the Motorola Moto X managed to do quite well against the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One, it hasn’t fared as well against the Sony Xperia Z. It loses by 4 points to 1 here and this is the first real comparison which shows how much more Motorola have to do before it can reclaim its spot among the top cell phone manufacturers of the world.
