Clearing the Cache Partition:
NOTE: assuming that you're experiencing issues with your smartphone and you're considering master resetting it to fix these problems but you're reluctant to do so in order to avoid losing personal data, then you should try fixing these issues by wiping the phone's cache partition. Unlike a master reset, clearing the cache will not result in the deletion of all your personal files stored on the phone's internal storage. To perform a cache wipe:
- Turn on the smartphone
- Press and hold the "Power" and "Volume Up" buttons
- Keep pressing the buttons for about 3 seconds, until the screen shuts off and the smartphone vibrates once
- Release the buttons once the screen has shut down
- Press the "Power" button to reboot your smartphone as you normally would. The cache partition has been wiped
NOTE: if clearing the cache hasn't solved the issues and you're planning on factory resetting your device, then follow this link for a full guide on how to apply a master reset on the Sony Xperia M2.
Safe Mode
NOTE: Safe mode is a great tool that allows you to reboot your smartphone without third party app support. This can become handy when you've installed a third party application that causes problems and prevents you from uninstalling it while running. In Safe mode, all third party apps are disabled.
To enter safe mode and remove a malicious app:
- With the smartphone turned on, press and hold the "Power" button
- Tap and hold "Power off"
- In the Safe Mode prompt, tap "OK". Your smartphone will reboot in safe mode
- After the device reboots, the "Safe Mode" label should be present on the screen
- To uninstall an app, tap the "Applications" icon while on the home screen
- Tap "Settings"
- Under "Device", tap "Apps"
- Swipe to the "Downloaded" screen
- Select the desired application and tap "Uninstall"
- Tap "OK" to confirm
- To exit safe mode, press and hold the "Power" button > tap "Power off"
- Once the smartphone is turned off, press and hold the "Power" button to reboot your device as you normally would
