I used a Motorola 4870 which has a MicroSD card in it. If you transfer files using your memory card and a MicroSD to SD adapter, you can play any mp3 in the music player, but you can't set them as ringtones. Fortunately, this tip worked great for that particular problem because I simply renamed the file extensions while in Windows Vista, replacing all of the .mp3 and .m4a extensions with .qcp and the phone read them pefectly as well as allowed me to use them as ringtones. Thanks for the super simple fix original poster.

Rename the file extension does not work. I successfully create ringtones in QCP format following the guide here:
