Yes, they can! I was in all the 48 lower states and US Cellular never failed to hit a tower. That is just with there nation wide plan though! US Cellular didn't offer rollovers, free or unlimited weekends, and additional lines on that paticular plan I had with them. I paid $90 for 900 nationwide minutes, so every minute was important and not used for 30-40 minute calls just to chat. If you go over the plan's minutes in some areas you could get hit for .40-.50 cents a min. so it would take a very disciplined person. Of course in the past year or so US Cellular has remained on there own and have turned down countless buyouts by all these other companies mentioned. If you ever look at US Cellulars coverage areas in the central US it is very impressive. You can pretty much take off walking into the woods miles from civilization and make a call! If all these other companies would realize that grandma and grandpa's house isn't always right off the main highway or in the big city and spend there money on towers instead of million dollar TV adds we would have more companies like US Cellular.

Hi, I've had both cingular and sprint. And by far I love my sprint service. I do alot of traveling out through the midwest (Minnesota, Wisconsin areas) and I have never lost service. Would it depend on the type of phone that you have?

Sprint does have good roaming coverage outside their own service areas thanks to roaming agreements with other big CDMA providers like Verizon and Alltel. I'm glad to know they rule the midwest, too! To answer your question, it's true that the phone's brand can play a part in the reception. I have heard several people say Sanyo is the best Sprint brand for reception. My LG works ok but my partner's Samsung seems to get slightly better reception. The difference is barely noticeable.

Over the past year my personal opinion is. Cell phone carriers have weeded out or bought up all the small carriers that were in the way of corporate takeovers/merges. It is identical to hardline phone carriers! They all use the same phone lines they just are passing the buck around! Just ask AT&T (monoply law) Bill Gates also fell into that gap/trap. The government (USA) will make sure no one has complete control or profit for very long. So regardless who you choose for your carrier the money still gets split up between everyone. These carriers are selling you a CONTRACT and throwing in a phone thats made in China that cost them pennies on the $.

    Re: Cingular vs. Sprint?

I've been considering moving from Cingular to Sprint as well. My biggest concern is that I don't quite understand how their plans work. Does the fair and flexible plan REALLY have no roaming charges? I know that when my daughter had Sprint a few years ago she could get a signal even in places where most phones couldn't which was probably due to the fact that some Sprint phones can use both analog and digital signals whereas all the Cingular phones I've had were only digital and there are some places where Cingular digital hasn't made it yet.

I've been told that both Sprint and Verizon have much data transfer times compared to Cingulars EDGE. I am particularly interested in the streaming audio (Sirius) that Sprint offers. I also live in one of the cities with the new Sprint TV available.

Can I get a Sprint plan that won't come up with "surprise" charges such as roaming?

Well Laurah, I added my dad to my share plan 2 months ago so he could get out of his Verizon contract. He travels all over Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. Nearly half of the calls on his detailed invoice are made or received roaming, and they haven't tried to charge me for it.

In all honesty, my first two Sprint bills were a little messed up and I had to keep calling them and getting it straightened out, so at that time I felt like I was being hit by "surprise charges" but once they fixed the bill and got my plan right, I haven't had a problem since. I'm not saying that will happen to you, but if your first bill looks weird call them and question everything!!!

I couldn't be happier with my Sprint service, I'm saving a ton of money with the nights & weekends at 6pm instead of 9pm! It was $10 extra, but that's how much extra minutes would have cost and I think it pays for itself.

    Re: Cingular vs. Sprint?

I assume you and your dad have the "free and flexible" plan. Having gone over the website again, it "appears" that there are no roaming charges. My concern with Sprint is that since some phones can go onto analog networks in quite obscure locations it is possible that those would be considered "outside" the network. Possibly I am worrying needlessly but I've learned to never trust a cell phone provider (and read all the fine print).

Do you ever use data services with Sprint? If so, does it seem pretty good speed? Currently with Cingular, it can sometimes (most times) feel as if I'm watching paint dry or grass grow to try and download something.

    Re: Cingular vs. Sprint?

I analog roam in Fitzgerald Georgia, a few points along the way there, and I also go analog if I carry my phone into the center of my house (lots of metal in the construction, all my friends have a similar problem in my house). I have not been charged for roaming, and I have made a few analog calls myself, as my dad has too I'm sure. Yes, I have the Fair & Flexible plan. If you decide to go with Sprint and want to use me as a referral, we can both get a $25 debit card as a sign-on bonus, you just need to give them my phone number when you sign up. Let me know if you want to do the referral thing and I'll PM my number to you

Yep, it is true. I, also, have the fair and flexible plan. I live around Walaska, GA. Sprint fine until you hit Reinhardt collage and then it starts a roaming. It tells me I will incure charges is that okay. I say okay. It proceeds and I make my call like any other call. No break but you punching the buttons. And when I get my bill it is not charged. I love the plan!

Hey, Brad, if you get to many referrals.........they just might have to put you on a 1099.

I haven't looked into your phone model, but the samsung a840 has a setting to turn off those "roaming charges" alerts. They're annoying if you already know it's free in your plan.
