I see incredible, MIND-BOGGLING phones available everywhere, but here. I mean COME ON, isn't America supposed to be on the cutting edge of technology? Are we not the #1 superpower in the world? OK Who cares my point is that I see these awesome phones while doing research online (Samsung's slimmest phone ever - available only in Japan, some other cool phone, only available in Korea) while we are left with phones that look more like weapons than phones.

Please. America. MAKE ME A TINY CELL PHONE. I WON'T BE HAPPY UNTIL I CAN IMPLANT IT INTO MY BRAIN.

Meanwhile I'm going to be stuck with a Katana... which is already outdated from what I see in other countries.

America spends WAY TOO MUCH money on warfare and homeland defense to be overly concerned with technological advances. You wanna know my honest opinion why Japan is on the frontlines of all the latest technology? After WWII, the United States demilitarized Japan, they are forbidden to maintain any kind of military, so they have billions and billions of dollars to spend on what? Technology. Damn, we created a monster!

It seriously makes me mad when I see an awesome phone online, only to then read "only available in Japan!"

Some examples here (I know some are "concept phones" but the Samsung SGH-X820 is real and small and cool. And the Samsung SPH-S4300 Music Phone is just slick!)

YAY. BIG WHOOP. About 6 years ago, my brother who was living in Japan at the time, had a sweet tiny cell phone that put not only my phone at the time to shame, but cell phones still made today as well! GARBAGE!! SOMEONE INVENT THE DELOREAN OF CELL PHONES!!!!

The OCP uses e-paper and a pop-out folding screen in order to provide a display that is much larger than that found in today's cell phones. The company estimates that it may take about 2 years to convert this concept into a working phone.
Wow, what HAVEN'T they thought of????

E-paper. I wonder how long it will take to become a reality. I saw that concept phone and laughed but then again, with the speed of technology (at least in other countries) e-paper is probably a lot closer to a reality than I think.

Re: Why are cell phones in America so OLD?

Japan is much smaller market and people eat up that stuff over there. Its a smaller risk to launch a new untested product. Much riskier to do that in the USA. So all manufacturers test how it does in Japan before taking it elsewhere.

Oh, the US being behind in cellphone tech ? it's a myth. Done some travelling in Europe and was not impressed. The same mix of cool high end phones vs. cheapo ones as over here in the US.

And SMS took off everywhere else because it was a LOT cheaper to sms than to make a voice call. In the US sms was late because sms was more expensive (an cumbersome) than voice calls. SMS is still has a niche use in the US: it is only used when making a vocie call is out of question, or to vote for stuff on TV. Btw, if you bring your own phone to Sprint or Cingular and it is compatible with their network (Cingular has to be GSM, etc.) then they will actiavate it for you no problem. I've done. So you can have the latest coolest stuff even though it is not offered here.

Now if I could only find a way to order some psycho-super-phone available only in Korea or wherever then take it to Sprint I'd be all set. Thanks!

right, that'd be great, but phones have to be made for a particular network, i.e. GSM vs. TDMA. That's like trying to play Quicktime video on a device which does not support Quicktime (and vice versa)...

My phone in Korea....played satellite DMB...A TV service for on the go, MP3, and even PMP for all your multimedia needs. It had infrared data transfer with MINI SD drive as well. That's freakin' technology.

Look in my sig for the link to Phonescoop and you can look up any US-released phone there for pictures and specs, even compare the features side-by-side. Or just google the model number.

I recommend that site and use it myself quite often.
