You can move out of your service area and keep your number. You won't have any problems as long as you are moving into another area with solid Sprint coverage. I say this as I am getting ready to go through my own itemized bill and call Sprint to demand about $40 worth of credits.
My problem is, we added my dad to our plan, and a few months later he decided to move outside of Sprint's coverage area. Should have been no problem because with the Fair & Flexible plans, "roaming calls are treated just like regular in-network calls and you won't incur any additional charges"
Ever since he started roaming 99% of the time on Alltel towers, they have been charging his line daytime minutes for "mobile-to-mobile" and also charging his line the daytime rate until 9pm every night when I have Nights & Weekends starting at 6pm on my plan. We really don't care about Sprint's billing screwup until we go over our 1500 daytime minutes, then it's a huge hassle to go through the bill, circling lines and punching numbers into a calculator to figure out how many minutes they stole from us.
Every time this happens and we call with the bill in-hand, they are profusely apologetic and more than happy to credit the bill, but they keep telling me "this isn't supposed to happen" and "we're going to look into this and try to fix it!" and it's getting to the point I'm ready to demand they release that third line from the contract. After all, since they are consistently billing me for things that are "included" in the contract, THEY are breaking the contract and I shouldn't be liable to pay the ETF, right?
Sorry to turn your thread into a rant about Sprint... soonerdude is going to see this and rub my nose in it because I am always sticking up for Sprint. I really do like Sprint, but this billing thing is starting to turn the tide regarding how I feel for them. Since ReadyLink doesn't work in roaming areas, and Sprint can't get their billing straight on lines that roam a lot, I would strongly advise you to make sure they have solid coverage EVERYWHERE you intend to use them.
