Virign Moblile texting problems

I helped my friend buy a virgin mobile pay as you go phone. She can recieve and send calls fine, and can also send text messages fine too. The only thing she can not seem to do is recieve text messages.
Has any one else had this problem and does anyone have any advice on how to fix it? If not we plan on returning the phone and buying a different pay as you go one with a different company.
