If you still have an existing account with that # about a week (how long it took a friend at work) what it is they need to make sure that you haven't cancled your other plan and the # has went to someone else. Also they have to deal with your old (current) provider.

I had the same question as eyeroc and if that is the case (that it takes a week), then why was I told that it would take "up to 24 hours" according to the customer service person I spoke to? It says up to 24 hours on the T-Mobile website as well. I am new to T-Mobile and called to switch over my number yesterday morning and the person I spoke to said it would take up to 24 hours and I still haven't gotten notification of the switch being completed. I would rather it not take a week! I'm not patient enough! lol.

It all really depends on your service provider there are laws in place that say you can transfer your number but if someone wants to play hardball it's not going to be overnight.

It usually takes anywhere from 24 hrs to as much as a week it's hard to be precise because you are dealing with two service providers, your current one and the one you wan to change to, just make sure that you are no longer under contract with the current service provider, did you check the coverage at the potential service provider, your handset unlocked and unlike T-Mobile other carriers will wait and cancel the service once it is ported out to the end of the bill cycle, T-Mobile pro-rates the cost if you decide to transfer out to the day the completion of the transfer is done.
