Now, what exactly is a sim card. I know you can save some contacts to it, and keeps your carrier info, but what else, how big is it memory wise, and when unlocking phones, is that all you really need to have that phone on a different network?

It's a chip inside your phone that your service provider gives you, it can store contacts, and it has all your information in it so it can work with cingular/tmobile/att ect

yeh it helps your cell provider to identify you and to monitor your usage.
why not go to google and type in how things work. And look for that site, type in their search engine sim card

That should help you to have a better understand of SIM card usage and functionality.

If you want to use an unlocked phone's text messaging and internet, you have to configure the data settings. Otherwise, it will work as a phone as soon as you put the SIM into it. If you haven't used our site's search before, you can test it now by doing a search for T-Mobile (or Cingular) Configurator and find out more about that, our search can answer a lot of common questions.

Subscriber Identity Module; a smart card containing the telephone number of the subscriber, encoded network identification details, the PIN and many other user data such as the phone book. A user's SIM card can be moved from phone to phone s it contains all the key information required to activate the phone.

From what I know, there was 32k sims and there are 64k sims. 64 being able to hold 500 contacts.

Unlocking phones>> Well if you are going to unlock a GSM phone then yes, once the phone is unlocked you can put any sim into it aslong as its the right bands.

    Hope that helped.

Right bands, GSM right? And, CDMA phones do not have SIMS do they? I think that is what CricKet uses, and my friend has them, and he doesn't have a SIM card. They have Razrs there, and I noticed they do not have a place for a SIM either. Is this manufacturer or the fact that that phone is no GSM?
Live life to the fullest. Even if full is over 3.75 a gallon! (Wow, I wrote this two years ago, and that is when I was paying 2.35 a gallon, I now pay 3.50!)

GSM and iDEN phones both use SIM cards, but they use different type of SIM, not compatible with each other. CDMA phones do not use a SIM card at all, unless you're in Korea. It will probably be many years before CDMA phones have SIMs in the US, if ever. CDMA phones are activtaed by their ESN (electronic serial number).
