Ok i want to buy this Samsung TRACE phone or t519 ? Now the guy at the store told me i can play mp3 and video clips that i record BUT i can also play video if i convert them ?

IS that true? Like i could get my home video that i have on pc convert to whatever the file is needed put on my "samsung trace" phone and watch it ? TRUE OR FALS?

Also if that is TRUE what other phones do that? Because i would then buy blackbary perl if it does that same?

and also what is the converer name or what file should i conver to? like from

    mpeg to?
    avi to?

Most newer phones, especially nokia and motorola, that have video recording abilities, record in 3GP format. If a video converted to this format it can be played on that phone once it is transferred. I am not sure what format the BB Perl uses or plays (if it even records video). If the devices supports video playback, then the biggest issue you have to worry about is going to be space on the phone

You should be ok at that point as long as you can access media (3gp) files off of the memory card slot.

    Samsung TRACE Video Specifications

I use a program called Samsung PC Studio (Available from samsung.com). The Multimedia Manager portion fo this program allows you to convert a movie (.mpeg, .avi, .divx...) to 3gp format using the "Create movie" button. You have some formatting options available. The settings that I used to successfully play an episode of the simpsons on my T-519 were:
-choose the phone in the first column (SGH-T519)
    -Resolution of 128x96 (SubQCIF)
    -File Format 3GP

    ---Advanced Options:
    Codec: -MPEG-4 SP
    Frame Rate: -15 fps
    Resize: -Speed
    Quality: -Medium
    Audio Codec: -AMR
    Mode: -AMR_NB_MR122
    ---

You have the option of adding a subtitle and of breaking up the file into chunks (mainly for multimedia messaging service MMS).

Be sure to check "Save to Phone" before clicking start. Alternately save the file to your PC and then upload the file to your phone over either Bluetooth or a data cable. This is usefull if the file is to large to fit on the phone and needs to go directly to the memory card.

I have successfully played video from the micro-SD card and I intend to put some south park and simpsons episodes on my trace for a long flight next month.

Other settings may work for you, I kept getting 3gp files that would not play until I changed the audio codec from AAC to AMR. Some mpeg video files only allow me to set fps to zero, they do not play on the phone when converted.

Good Luck, and a shiny nickel to the person who posts a link to a non T-Mobile crippled firmware for the trace. This great phone could be so much better.

    -Kit
