it must first be activated on a my favs phone though, so you need to have your fav 5 set, put it in a my fav phone and once its activated then you can do it in another phone

Yes it will work. When you talk to your T-Mobile Rep. tell them that you want to sign-up for a My Faves plan but you don't want to by a phone from them. You will have to set-up your my faves contact via the internet. But they will work. The only difference in a "My Faves" phone is a Java applacation that lets you access and edit your My Faves contacts thru the phone.
