Not sure what thread to put this in, but since I'm currently a T-Mobile customer I'd figure I'd put it in here.

Basically, about, hmm.. 5 or 6 years ago I was a Cricket customer. The number they gave me was so awesome that I wanted it ported with me when I switched to T-Mobile.

Shortly afterwards there was a problem I noticed that I was not receiving calls from my uncle who lives about 30 minutes from me in another town. He was receiving a Cricket error message ("The Cricket number you are calling is no longer in service" something like that). So some calls were made, problem solved, though I cannot remember exactly what the problem was.

Anyway, so skip ahead to now. I discover there is another region about an hour away that this problem is still occurring for anyone who lives in this particular town. As this is where I work, it is critically essential that I be able to receive calls from this area. In fact, I almost didn't get the job I have now because the employers were not able to contact me through phone (but went the extra mile and emailed me). Sometimes if people try to call me, if they dial the area code first it goes through. Sometimes it will work fine regardless then the next day it will give the error message again.

Anyone who calls me from a cellphone is not affected at all, only people calling me from landlines in this particular town. There may be other locations similarly affected but I have been called from landlines in other areas like NYC across the country without problem.

I called T-Mobile and several times we reset the phone without any resolution. I contacted Cricket but I'm no longer in their system at all, apparently, and neither is the number and they cannot explain how or why people trying to call me are receiving a Cricket error message. They blame the local towers of whatever phone service these people are calling from (different services, AT&T and Verizon so I know it's not the company itself that is the problem). I tried contacting Verizon to see if it had anything to do with their equipment but they refused to speak to me at all because I am not a customer.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this? I would really really really REALLY hate to have to change my number since a) it will cost money, which sticks in my craw obviously and b) it's a really nifty and easy to remember number, I mean, it's just awesome which is why I wanted to keep it to begin with.

    Now,

Did you ever get the problem solved. I had cricket, and sometimes I'd think things were alright then another time, people would tell me that Cricket came on saying what they told your uncle.
So today I got calls in the morning, then it slacked off. I tried to call my cricket phone from skype, and the error message came on.
So I got pissed and went to pocket, which I had my cricket number ported.
Now if I'm understanding you correctly, some people still can't get in touch with you, even if you are with T=mobile. I think that;s how I'm reading you.
Now you got me worrying if I'm going to get the same cricket error message even though I changed to pocket.

It was never solved, but I haven't really met anyone else with this problem. I have heard that it may be because someone in the area has the same # as me, with a different area code but who knows?

    Re: Bizarre porting problem. Help?

well, I've been having this problem so that's why I switched to pocket.
This number I had originally came from Virgin Mobile. I ported this number to att. No problems receiving calls, just too expensive for me. So, I ported the number to cricket. then after a while I started having trouble, I coulld call out, but when someone called me, not all the time, Cricket came on saying I wasn't available. So thinking it might be the phone, I bought a new one. Same trouble, So I got mad and had this number ported to pocket. So far so good. When someone calls they don't have to wait 6rings before it starts ringing on the pocket phone, like they had to when I had cricket. I guess I'm just going to have to wait and see what happens. All I know is if the phone don't ring, I lose money and then I don't know what to do if it does it again. Maybe just give up porting and let them give me a number, I hated giving up the cricket phone because it had a lot of features on it..
    Thanks for the comeback

Are people always using the area code when they dial you? If not they need to. That is very important in dealing with ported numbers. The technical process for how number porting works is agonizingly complex so there can be any number of things that can affect it that seem simple, such as dialing the area code. If this doesn't settle the problem then I would refer back to customer care. Make sure you are staunch about the recurrence of this issue. Ask to be connected to the Wireless Number Portability Center. They are the experts and can file the necessary engineering trouble tickets to research a proper solution. They will most likely want specific dates and times of affected phone calls and the numbers they were coming from so they can backtrack the issues.

Thanks for the reply. This could have been my problem with cricket. I don't know how many times i've called customer service about it. I didn't know to go to the porting dept.
But since I switched to pocket, I know nobody is dialing my area code first. Because these are all people that have been calling before, whether they reached me or not. I haven't had a single person say they can't reach me now.
So you might be right, the problem might have been in the porting department, Bujt the Cricket porting department , because if they even reached me, there phone had to ring at least five times before mine rang the first time.. Now,with Pocket, mine rings as soon as there's ring.
