If I get an unlocked Android set and go to activate it on a T-Mobile non contract plan, will I have to pay for a data plan? I don't want one and I don't need it. I've heard the only problem is that you need to activate your phone and set up the Google account and what not and that requires data access. Can the people at a T-Mobile location set that up for me with temporary access or something just to set up the account? Or can I just pay for data the first month and then shut it off?
Any help with the whole process would be much appreciated. I'm not going to get a data plan under any circumstances, so don't try and convince me or something. I just need help with the activation process and if there's a way around the data plan.

Re: Android Activation
I'm pretty sure that depends on what phone. Some Android phones won't work whatsoever if you don't have the data plan like the G1. Which phone were you thinking of getting?

Re: Android Activation
I'm not looking to get a new handset until at least the Summer, if not as late as the Fall or early next year even (which means I'll have a lot more to choose from in the coming months). Though right now I'm looking at importing the Motorola Milestone and using it on T-Mobile. Since I won't get a data plan I wont need the T-Mobile HSPA bands.
And the G1 seriously won't work without a data plan? Like if you bought an already activated G1 from somebody who paid the ETF and got out of his contract, and tried to activate it'd just deny you access to making calls? What about Wi-Fi and using it without any service? Are there any other Android handsets like this?
