I'm trying to purchase a pda device for e-mail purposes mainly. I will
be using this for non-corporate e-mail right now. (I'm in a startup,
and we just use IMAP/POP3 rather than exchange at this point).
Which one of these models would people recommend? Are there others I
should be considering? Are these technologies / features vastly
different?

The Treo I think would meet your needs now and in the future using
POP/IMAP and Exchange syncing. The BlackBerry relies on a program
running on your desktop to push messages to your device.

Re: Treo 650 vs. Blackberry
No it doesn't. I had the BB 7510 and what you do is log in to a website and
add up to 10 email addresses that you want the Blackberry to check. It sends
the emails from those accounts to the BB. No need to run an app on your
desktop but I do have to agree. the Treo sounds better because my BB was a
piece of crap!

Why didn't you like the BB?

Re: Treo 650 vs. Blackberry
In a mere four months it broke twice. The first time the Direct Connect
button stopped working and the unit had to be replaced. Even though it was
clearly a warranty repair Nextel forced me to pay $35. They insisted that if
I paid them $2.50 per month for the 'insurance' I would be able to get
repairs/replacements for free but if I have to pay even as little as $2.50
per month it is not free.
The second issue was the screen crapped out. Another warranty repair I had
to pay $35 for. The first one happened after only having the device for
about a month, the second happened about three and half months into the
contract so I dropped Nextel altogether. I was very happy to pay their $200
early termination fee because I was paying $120 per month for data and voice
service. Nextel's service was horrible but from what I did find out was that
RIM, the company that makes the Blackberry, won't let any other company
service their handhelds so if you need service you have to send it back to
them for warranty repair, which could take up to two weeks. I didn't have
any issue with sending or receiving email, getting on the Internet or making
calls but I do have to say that there were times where I didn't have a good
signal and the call was dropped or my net connection dropped. This is
something I never had a problem with on my Sanyo RL2000. It has great
battery life and incredible signal strength. The best I have seen to date.
For the money I was spending at Nextel I would think I should have gotten a
lot better service when I device crapped out but they were unwilling to
assist me other than send me on a never ending goose chase around NYC to
find a repair center that doesn't exist. They even sent me to Staples,
claiming they repaired the Blackberries but as I thought when I got to
Staples they looked at me like I had another two heads coming out of my
shoulders.
If I were you I would go with a Palm-based device. I wouldn't even go with a
Windows CE, like an HP or Compaq. My experience with those are a whole other
story for another day. I have heard some issues with the Treo 650 though,
don't remember what they were but a friend of mine has the Treo 600 and he
likes it a lot. The only thing I don't like about the Treo 600 is the screen
but then I haven't seen too many devices with a screen as good as my
Tungsten C.
I hope this helps in your decision.

Re: Treo 650 vs. Blackberry
just for the record, I think the issue on the 650 is the memory. They
did a very stupid thing in the os and required all data written to the
flash rom to be at least 512 bytes. this ends up wasting a lot of
storage and sometimes data that fit on the 600 won't fit onto the 650

Re: Treo 650 vs. Blackberry
the one thing that is very appealing about the BB is the push
technology. I can't seem to find anyone knowledgeable at spring to
tell me how the technology on the treo compares.

Re: Treo 650 vs. Blackberry
Not sure how the Treo works but with the Blackberry I actually didn't like
the push technology. I felt it used a lot of battery power. I would have to
charge it every night, there was no way I could get a mere two days out of
one charge. My Sanyo RL2000 is 1,000 times better in battery power and
signal strength.
The other day me and a friend went to Home Depot. He has the 7510 also and
he needed to call someone but he didn't have a signal at all. He had to call
his brother about something he needed for the kitchen sink for installing
his new dish washer. We were in the middle of the store and like I said, no
signal so I handed him my phone and said "try mine". He made the call, got
what he needed and we were outta there. His BB was also on Nextel and he got
his signal back as soon as we left the store. Mine didn't drop one bar even
in the store.

Re: Treo 650 vs. Blackberry
though this is a issue, palm is giving awa 128 mb SD card for free to
registered treo 650 users therefore it not a big deal.

There are a couple of push email technologies for the Treo. Checkout
Chatter, it's an email client that pushes to your Treo. Also, you can
checkout the Sprint Business Connection Software.

Re: Treo 650 vs. Blackberry
jljackson,
I am big Treo fan because it meets my needs. I also like the fact that it
seems more expandable with types of apps then the BB. Of course this is a
biased opinion since I love it. Check out the discussion groups at
www.treocentral.com those guys can answer just about any question on the
treo.
